VANDALISM

Chief Auspos wrote an article last month
about vandalism. I would like to add a few
words about a particular type of vandalism
that he did not mention - BB guns. BB guns
used properly can be very enjoyable and are
purposed to learning marksmanship and
hunting skills. However, in some cases little
J()hnny asks 'Mom and Dad for a BB gun and
with little, or no training is allowed to
shoot it to his hearts content. I'm sure that
most parents lecture their children on gun
safety and to never shoot at anything but a
target. However, kids being kids get bored
with shooting targets that do not move and
graduate to bigger and better things such
as their neighbors cat or a blue jay feeding
in the family bird house. Left unchecked,
this behavior continues until Johnny learns
that he can also use a BB gun to get revenge.
Johnny's neighbor may at some time admonish
him for whatever reason, and now Johnny
returns later in the evening to get revenge.
Johnny hides himself under a bush or behind
a tree and takes careful aim. A distance of
20 feet puts a hole into a neighbor's picture
window. What marksmanship! "That takes care
of that creep.", Johnny remarks, as he
falls back into friendly territory. Johnny
has now concurred his first enemy and won.
This is only one type of vandalism committed
by BB guns and I'm sure many of you can think
of others that have happened.

.

must have the owners permission to do so, or
you can be issued a citation for "Recreational
Vehicle Trespass". These laws are not in
effect just to give the police department
something to do, but are in effect to protect
property owners rights and so that people do
not get hurt while operating these machines.
A motorcycle/mini-bike accident is very
serious in nature at almost any speed. The
rider or driver literally has no protection.
He is almost always thrown from the machine
and then his skin comes in contact with the
ground. Depending upon the speed of the ve-
hicle, his skin is scraped away layer by
layer until finally he comes to a sudden stop
by a telephone pole/street sign/fences, etx.
The biggest danger in this type of accident IS
collision with a fixed object. This causes
bones to break, and in many cases, death.
Property owners right must also be observed.
I'm sure most people would not like it if
every once-in-awhile someone on a motorcycle
drove through their yard. Many people go
to great lengths to keep their yard looking
well groomed and do not appreciate 6 inch
ruts in it.
It will be the policy of the Ramsey Police
Dept. that if any under age driver is oper-
ating a motor vehicle to tag the operator and
if necessary to tow the vehicle.
PARENTS:
Please supervise your son/daughter, as a
tag will mean that you will have to appear
in court with your son/daughter and a towinq
bill that could run $35.00 or more.
We want everyone to enjoy the upcoming sum-
mer and have a good time, so kids: operate
your machines in a safe manner and not on the
roadways or ditches.
PARENTS BE SURE YOUR CHILD IS AWARE OF
THESE CONDITIONS!!!!
structure of businesses and the fact that no

Parents, do you realize what can happen if
your front window gets shot out? It can cost
you two hundred dollars and more to replace.
Even if you have insurance your deductible
will be $100 of more. Take some time to ex-
plain the new responsibility the gun owner
has, and supervise your child's shooting.
You will both have fun. If you should
ever witness an act of vandalism, execute
your responsibility as a citizen of this
community and talk to the violators parents
or contact the police. Remember this could
happen to you just as easily, wouldn't you
want your neighbor to be a responsible person
too?
RECREATIONAL
VEHICLES

Now that spring-like weather has finally
arrived, we are starting to see more and more
motorcycles/mini-bikes roaming around. One of
our main problems each year is the illegal use
of these machines by underage drivers on road-
ways and ditches. We realize the operation of
such vehicles is exciting and just plain fun,
however everyone must be aware of the laws re-
gulating these vehicles. These laws will be
enforced for the protection and safety of all.
Operation of these vehicles registered (license
plates). This does not apply to vehicles being
operated on private property. If the vehicle
is being operated on private property, you
