LORD OF
LIFE LINES

Can one be a Christian and not go to Church?
A question asked so often these days. How would
you answer? As I visit members (active, inac-
tive) as well as non-church people in our
community this question keeps popping up. I
hear either directly (verbally) or indirectly
(by deed) that Church membership and partici-
pation is incidental to Christian living. 'You
can be a Christian without the Church.' It's
like the current trend of living together. 'We
can be in love, share commitments, without the
benefit of legal amrriage. It isn't neces-
sary to verify our relationship,' they say.
These two illustrations are an example of a
wider destructive attitude prevelant today.
The attitude that whatever is right for me,
whatever feels good is all that is necessary.
There is a blatent desire to think only of
yourself. The more fearful we become, the
more we tend to close ourselves into our own
private religious worlds.
As I read and studied the scriptures I have
come to the conclusion that faith i~ born in
community and is a community expression. I
know that Christ is the' Head of the Body called
the Church. It is the believers (you and me)
who make up the Body. The Church is a pul-
sing organism giving expression to God's grace
and love for His world. To intentionally cut
off yourself from the Church is to be faithless.

When you decide not to join, not to participate,

.

you abandon the body. The New Testament does
not endorse or reveal Christianity as being a
solely private activity. This business that
you can do it 'your way' or 'I'm a believer in
Jesus but won't have anything to do with the
church' won't fly with God's Word. Not at all!
Not once! Not ever! You can't take the head
from the body and use it as your own private
religious expression. The Head (Christ) be-
longs to the body. The body (the Church)
will die without the Head (Christ). If you
choose you can remove yourself from the body.
Much like a finger or a toe can be removed.
When a person does that he/she is cut off
and is either dead or has to be frozen un-
til there is reunion.
People believe that their religion is a
matter of choice, like they can pick it up or
drop it, choosing it like a consumer item
(oranges or apples) today. They church hop
until the right one comes along. If they
happen to be in the mood they'll go to Church.
They'll want to join the rest of us in com-
munity. We pretend we are possessors and de-
terminers. The New Testament witness reveals
just the opposite. We are receivers placed
in the community that is the Body fo Christ,
in the cneter of God's presence. It is here
we receive the sacraments and give God's
Word a chance. To attend not at all or
inconsistently is to cut your nose off in
spite of your face. The body becomes dis-
figured. It now becomes an ugly representation
of God's purpose. In all humility let us
give up our fears and arrogance and join the
body in healthy living. We need each other as
Christ leads us.
After 15 months of existence and nearing 200
members, Cross of Hope Lutheran Church will
move its worship service to the purchased site
on the 10 acre parcel at County Rd. 47 and
179th Ave. N.W.. Preparations are underway in
planning for a festive outdoor worship service
on Pentecost Sunday, May 22nd. Since February
7, 1982, Cross of Hope has been worshipping at
Anoka High School, while serving the Ramsey,
Burns, Andover, Oak Grove areas.
It has been exciting to be received by this
area so enthusiastically and see the response
to Cross of Hope grow. I know many people have
asked about our building plans. We are hoping
that in the very near future, the building pro-
cess will take shape. A warm welcome is ex-
tended to all.
