CHURCH ACTIVITIES Lord of Life Lines was sitting in the House Chambers listen- ing to Governor Perpich give his budget ad- dress to a joint-session of the Minnesota State Legislature. To my left sat the former heads of state, Governors Elmer, C.ELmer, and Wendell Anderson, Gov. Stassen, and Gov. LaVander. The House Chaplain had just humbly given his opening prayer. He prayed, "In the midst of the troubles that surround us, when we see the homeless, the hungry, those who fear, and the insecure, when compromises come to rest and expediences return to plague us, keep us from adding to the mistakes of the past.(all in one breath). Save us from accep- ting a little of what we know to be wrong in order to get a little of what we imagine to be right." I went on to pray that we might vote, and live as to reflect the com- passion and grace of the God we all believe. When I sat down, Gov. Stassen looked at me and smiled. I'm not sure what that meant. Maybe he thought I was referring to the more recent mistakes that are plaguing us. (not his of course). We all sat there listening to the current Governor explain to us how we would get back on the road to recovery. He stated, "Not by a pray as you go budget, but by a pay 3S you go budget." I suppose that meant we agreed with everything and would work hard to make sure that his proposals would become reality. But, then almost im- mediately, all the T.V. people rush into the chambers to interview leaders of the opposing party and they all disagree with the povernor. Oh well, back to the mistakes th~t plagued us in the past. Partisan poli- tics sometimes get in the way. Why is it we elect people to positions of political aut- hority (regardless of party affiliation) and then spend the next 2 or 4 years trying to get rid of them? Doesn't make sense! That afternoon 1 went home to my community with prayer in hand and heart. In th~ even- ing I visited with another unemployed member and assured him that better times were ahead and tried to convince him that the mistakes that have plagued us in the past would not be repeated. I told him that weak compromises and shady expediences would not destroy our goal of a better life in Minnesota. Like Governor Stassen, he just smiled at me. I'm not sure what that meant. I didn't get a standing ovation. He left me with that typical "That's nice, 'Pastor" look. Despite what Governor Perpich said, I went home thinking maybe I better pray as I go or we would indeed end up paying as we go. -Pastor Tomas E. Meeks, Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
