CHILDREN ACT FAST

...

SO DO POISONS!

The week of March 20-26 is officially Poison
Prevention Week, but this is a problem that
exists the entire year. Those of us with
young children at home or where young children
visit should be especially prepared, for 70%
of all poisoning accidents involve children
under age 5, in the "fast and fearless" years.
Beware of the child age 6 months to 1 year,
for at that age, everything goes into the
mouth. They are out to explore the floor and
low storage areas, especially the kitchen and
bathroom. They equate containers with food so
POP! Into the mouth it goes.
Children age 1 to 2 have the highest ac-
cident rate of any age group. Because their
world now includes table tops, counters,
dressers, workbenches, and anything else they
can reach above eye level.
Youngsters from age 2 to 5 are able and
quite adept at getting into places high up
that we were so sure were 'safe' like cabinets
shelves, and medicine chests. At this age
drugs and medicines become responsible for
most accidental poisonings. The winner registered at
THE NORTHERN BANK'S Ramsey office, one of
three, the others being 7th Ave. No. and 3rd
and Jackson, both in Anoka.
Winnin9 a trip for two to historic Williams-
burg, Va. was John Newbolt of Ramsey. The
winning slip was filled out by Joan Newbolt.
Ed. note: Joan Newbolt was also the winner
of the contest to name the Resident. This
year's certainly going good for Joan.
CON G RAT U L A T ION S ! !

accounts for 20% of accidental poisonings in
all age groups. Child resistant closures have
done an excellent job of reducing accidents.
Notice I said child-resistant, NOT child-
proof. So please don't think hateful thoughts
when you struggle with your child-resistant
prescription bottle. Incidentally, you can
request non-child resistant containers if
necessary.
Don't forget your greenery. Many of the
plants that we use to decorate our homes and
gardens with are also potential poisons to
the unsuspecting, inquisitive and adventurous
child.
SO - WHAT DO YOU DO IN AN EMERGENCY??
1) call doctor, hospital, poison control cen-
ter, emergency 911 or police.
2) dilute stomach contents with tap water or
milk
3) find suspected poison
If poison is corrosive (acid, lye, drain
cleaner) or a petroleum product, stop here,
DO NOT make victim vomit.

If victim is conscious and not convulsir.g,

PLAYGROUND

Recently a playground committee was formed
in Ramsey. So far this committee is comprised
of members from the Ramsey School Advisory
Council, Park Board & Lions. The purpose of
the committee is to develop plans for upgrading
and improving the present Ramsey School Play-
ground.
Anyone interested in becoming involved in
this project, please contact:
Ramsey Community School, 427-9350
or
Wendy Studer, 421-4341
The next meeting will be held at Ramsey
School Tuesday, April 5th, 7:00pm.

4) induce vomiting with syrup of Ipecac.
5) hold head down over basin, keep basin
and contents to help identify poison
6) dilute again with water or milk
This month a local manufacturer has made
available bottles of syrup of Ipecac with
the Minnesota Poison Control System tele-
phone number and logo right on the label.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure you have a
bottle of syrup of Ipecac in your house.
Some quick calculations work out that there
will be over 50 accidental poisonings just in
the City of Ramsey this year, so let us all
do our very best to prevent each and everyone.
Information and pamphlets are available at
_your local drug store, including information
on the Mr. Yuk program, poisonous and non-
poisonous plants and guides to poison pre-
venti on.
REMEMBER: Pick up a bottle of syrup of
Ipecac. And don't forget, it won't do you any
good at all if you can't find it when an emer-
gency arisesl!

-Wayne Jeffrey

After all is said and done, there's more
said than done. -Unknown

SHARING

with
ELAINE

Spring is soon upon us; the sparrows have
already cheered my early .orning awakening an~
the slush slush sound of .elting snow bene~th
my owndering feet has made this fact most
prevalent.
Everyone enjoys Pancakes and most mixes are
great but why not try making your own origi-
nals for those special people- your family.

RAMSEY'S HOT SHOT SENIORS

As usual, the Seniors in Ramsey are having
a blast with their new group. Do you have a
question regarding your upcoming wedding?
"Ask Cheri" is a column devoted to bridal
related questions.

Dear Cheri,
I plan to have a cathedral length veil for my
wedding and would like to leave it on for the
reception but do not want to carry it or let
it hang and have it ruined. What can I do?
J.C.- Ramsey
Dear J.C.
A cathedral length veil can be a problem at a
reception and I recommend that you lOOK into
the prospect of having a veil which has the
cathedral length detachable leaving a shoulder
or fingertip length attached to the headpiece
to wear during the reception. You could also
speak to the bridal shop in regards to buss-
leing up the veil. There are a couple of ways
to do this. One is to put small cov~red but-
tons on the dress and little thread loops on
~he veil and drape the veil. Another way would
b~ to make a narrow belt that would snap on
your ~ress at the waist and then the veil

would be gathered and secured behind the belt
and drape attractively down your back.
Cheri

l.1ear Cheri,
How much m&ke-up should I wear and how should
it be applied.

B.R. -Ramsey

Dear B.R.
I recommend that you wear a little more blush
and eye shadow than normal, but not much. It
should be applied smoothly and evenly starting
with a good foundation and ending with a light
application of powder to keep off the shine.
You should look fresh and natural, with that
bridal glow, for those close-up intimate pic-
tures. Some make-up saloons will Jive you a no
charge facial and point out your best features.
Cheri
Send inquiries to: JlAsk Cheri", Bridal Consul-
tant c/o The Ramsey Resident, 16330 Yttrium St
Ramsey, Minn. 55303

Money is an article which may be used as a
universal passport to everywhere except heaven,
and as a universal provider of everything except
happiness. -Wall Street Journal

"JOHN'S FAVORITES"

2 c. freshly grated or finely gr. raw potatoes
3 eggs
1 c. flour (whoe wheat or all-purpose)
~ t. salt
2 T. oil
1 T. finely minced onion (if desired)

Put all ingredients into medium mixing bowl.
Stir well.
