As part of the Sesqui-
centennial celebration, Anoka County Historyical Society (ACHS) encourages
quilters to design and make a heritage quilt. Each Sesquicentennial quilt mal(er
is invited to bring his/her quilt and its story to the Anoka County History Center
not later than November 1,2007, to have it included in the Sesquicentennial
Quilt Exhibit. The exhibit will open on Tuesday, December 4,2007, and remain
open through the month of January, 2008.
Quilters who complete their project by July may enter their quilt in
a special division at the county fair. The Anoka County Suburban Fair is the
largest county fair in the state and runs a full six days during the last week of
July each year. For the 2007 Fair, there will be special Sesquicentennial quilt
categories for Open Class entries. Only quilts with the 150th theme will be
accepted for this competition. Stitches in Time, available at the History Center,
contains the patterns and directions needed, as well as sharply focused informa-
tion about the local history that is paired with each pattern.
A "heritage" quilt uses traditional quilt patterns to illustrate a story or
introduce an important topic in history. Topics may be personal, local or global
events, and should be paired with patterns that either symbolize or picture
that event. Authors Maria King and Vicl(ie Wendel have done exactly that in
compiling their book, Stitches in Time. The "log cabin" pattern, for example,
is paired with the topic of early homesteading in Anoka County, and the story
of Anoka's Congressional Medal of Honor winners is illustrated by the use of
the Liberty Star pattern. Stitches in Time is both a local history and a "how to"
book for heritage quilters. It includes cutting and assembly directions for each
of 14 blocks, and two alternative blocks.
Stitches in Time is available for $10.00 at the Anoka County History
Center, located at 2135 Third Ave North in downtown Anoka.
