Commissioner Lehman wondered if the equipment could be removed and sold.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood indicated it could. The whirl could be reused in the
projects. Fireflies included in their plan but St. Croix Recreation did not. Fireflies stated by
using the Whirl in their project are warranting that it is still good for use.
Commissioner Lehman asked if they could remove the Whirl and use it in another park.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated they could but then the City would need to warranty
it as safe for use, which he did not know if they wanted to do this.
Commissioner Olds asked which play structure from a historical standpoint is less maintenance.
ParksfUtilities Supervisor Riverblood thought they would be about the same. Wood over time
will burnish and seem to be more resistant to vandalism. He stated they can almost plan on
replacing the playgrounds in fifteen to twenty years because of safety reasons and loss of
adventure over time.
Chairperson Johns thought the St. Croix plan had more features. She favored the wood look of
the play area because it seemed more natural with the trees.
Commissioner Lehman thought the rock climbing wall was a nice feature.
Commissioner Erickson thought the St. Croix plan would appeal to more children and attract
more kids.
Commissioner Olds wondered what the demographics were for the park.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood indicated he was not sure.
Commissioner Olds asked if the proposals included the borders.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood indicated they did not.
Consensus of the Commission was to recommend the St. Croix plan with wood for the posts,
decks and roof sections.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated they would need to check with the vendor to make
sure they can get the decks and roof sections in wood.
Motion by Commissioner Erickson, seconded by Commissioner Hansen, to recommend
forwarding the St. Croix proposal for the new play equipment with wood posts, decks and roof
sections at Titterud Park to the Finance Committee.
Park and Recreation Commission/November 9, 2006
Page 6 of 8
