.

. ..

City of Ramsey
Comprehensive Plan Amendment
Transportation Element

Trail Design Guidelines

The City has determined that trail facilities should be constructed along various segments of
minor arterials, collector streets, and local streets and off-road. The recommended trail
locations and facility types are identified on Figure 3-7. The trail facility types are further
listed below:

. On-Road (A) in Urban Areas - To be constructed within the street right-of-way and
adjacent to travel lanes in urbanized areas of the City. The trail will consist of two,
8-foot to lO-foot paved shoulders. The minimum width of the combined paved
surface (travel lanes and trails) will be 40 feet to 44 feet. (See Figure 3-11.)

. On-Road (B) in Urban Areas - To be constructed within the street right-of-way, but
separated from travel lanes by a 4-foot to 8-foot grassy boulevard. The trail will
consist of two, 8-foot to 10-foot paved recreational paths and should be constructed
within urbanized areas of the City. The minimum right-of-way for the travel lanes,
parking lanes, curbs and gutters, grassy boulevard, and the recreational paths will be
72 feet to 84 feet. (See Figure 3-12.)

. On-Road (B) in Rural Areas - To be constructed within the street right-of way, but
separated from the travel lanes in rural areas of the City. The two, 8-foot to lO-foot
trail surfaces are to be paved and separated from the travel lanes by an 8- foot
shoulder, a lO-foot to 20-foot ditch, and a 2-foot buffer. (See Figure 3-13.)

. Off-Road in Urbanized Areas - To be.constructed outside the street right-of-way
within 35-foot dedicated, trail right-of-way. The trail corridor will consist of two,
lO-foot areas for trees and shrubs and two trail surfaces. One trail surface (natural or
paved) will be 5 feet wide for pedestrians. The second trail surface will be paved and
10 feet wide for two-way bicycle operations. (See Figure 3-14.)

. Off-Road in Rural Areas - To be constructed outside the Metropolitan Urban Service
Area (MUSA), separated from the streets, and within a dedicated 75-foot wide trail
corridor. Two, ll-foot wide sections of the trail will support trees, shrubs; and
grassy clear zones. A two-foot wide buffer zone (natural surface) will be provided on
either side of a lO-foot wide equestrian trail. A 29-foot wide buffer zone, consisting

Page 3-46
