Earlier this fall, a group of us decided to do a project that we
wanted to do that would be beneficial to the residents of the City of
Ramsey. My team and I decided to plant trees at River's Bend Park,
but to do this, we needed some help. We contacted Mayor Gamec
and he helped us by suggesting who to work with at the City and
names of area nurseries that we could contact that might donate tress
for this project. Our contact at the City was Mark Boos and he helped
us to get organized and develop a plan for our plantings.
So, I want to thank the following people for all their help and
support: Mayor Tom Gamec; Mark Boos, Parks Supervisor; Wirz's
Nursery & Tree Farm; Morton's Nursery and Garden Center; and the
Anoka Ramsey Farm & Garden Center. I also want to thank my
family for donating money to buy trees and to everyone who helped us
plant all those trees!
From this project, we learned that as students, we can do
important things and we learned to care for the environment. We also
learned to work together as a team and as a family. So, again, thanks
to everyone; now it's time to enjoy what we have.
To do great important tasks, two things are necessary; a plan
INNOVATIVE INSPECTION
TRAINING
FOSTERS INTERSTATES
COOPERATION
13
MDA Nursery Inspection staff co- hosted
an interstate training session with the Wisconsin
Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer
Protection on June 20th and 21st. Inspection staff
from the Iowa Department of Agriculture joined
Minnesota and Wisconsin inspectors conducting
inspections at two nurseries near Hastings,
Minnesota and one near Black River Falls,
Wisconsin. This training session provided an
opportunity to compare inspection techniques,
protocols and regulatory responds to plant pests
of common concern and provide field training for
nursery inspection staff from the Horticultural
Inspections Society, Central Chapter.
Each inspector brings their own
knowledge and experience to share at this training
session and leaves with the combined knowledge
and experience of those participating. This informal
field training is hosted by HIS member states on
a rotating basis. Inspections were conducted in
Nebraska and Iowa in 1999.
I would like to extend a special thank you
to Kenda Klaus, Klaus Nurseries, Eric Nordlie,
Baily Nurseries and John Ahl, Northern Christmas
Tree Growers for serving as hosts.
LOWER RUM RIVER
WATER MANAGEMENT
ORGANIZATION
The Lower Rum River Water
Management Organization meets on the third
Thursday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the
Committee Room of Anoka City Hall to discuss
storm and surface water issues affecting Ramsey,
Anoka, Andover and part of Coon Rapids. The
public is welcome to attend.
and not quite enough time. — Anonymous
