2

WHAT'S
HAPPENING
IN RAMSEY

Farm Animals Continued from Page 1

Animal
Cow
Horse, Mule, Llama
Donl<ey, Burrow, Pony, Goat, Pig,
Sheep, Lamb
Turl<ey, Goose
Chicl<en, Ducl<

Number of Units
1.5
1.0

.5
.1
.04

Number of Animal
Parcel Size Units Allowed
3 acres (130,680 square feet) 2
5 acres (217,800 square feet) 3
1 0 acres (435,600 square feet) 5
15 acres (653,400 square feet) 7
20 acres + (871,200 square feet) No limitation

Language is also being added to require a conditional
use permit for the maintenance of exotic animals on a parcel.
Secondly, it is being recommended that the horse
regulations in Section 5.09.05 of City Code be clarified to
reflect that the number ofhorses allowed on a parcel by this
section of City Code is applicable when only horses
(members of the equine family) are being l<ept on a property
and there is not a mix with other farm animals. The number
of horses or equines allowed on a parcel in this section of
City Code is based on parcel size, not units of waste
production as in the farm animal ordinance. The proposed
ordinance amends the parcel size requirements for
maintaining horses. Currently the horse ordinance states
that a property owner may have 2 horses on 3 acres, and
one additional horse for each 1/2 acre over 3. The ordinance
amendment will require one full acre over 3 for each
additional horse. Language has also been added to allow
for the lease of contiguous property for increasing the number
of permitted horses on a parcel when the horse owner has
title to at least 3 acres.
Thirdly, Chapter 5 has a Barns and Stables section
that requires barns to be at least 50 feet from any place of
human habitation. The R -1 Rural Residential Section in
Chapter 9 requires barns to be at least 75 feet from any

property line. The ordinance amendments would transfer
the 75 foot barn setbacl< requirement from Chapter 9 to
Chapter 5, in the same section as the 50 foot setbacl<
requirement.
The Planning Commission conducted a public
hearing on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, regarding the proposed
amendments to City Code described above. All comments
from the public hearing and written statements were
discussed by the Planning Commission.
Their recommendation regarding this ordinance will
be forwarded to the City Council for their consideration. If
the Council decides to approve the proposed farm animal
ordinance, the revised ordinance will become effective
approximately 30 days after the proposed ordinance is
published in the City's legal newspaper, the Anol<a Union.
Any questions should be directed to the Community
Development Department at 763-427-1410.

A 2002
COMMUNITY
CALENDAR
IS ON THE WAy........

The City of Ramsey is in the process of putting
together a Community Calendar that each resident in the
City will receive.
