10

WORKSHOP To
PLAN NEW
RAMSEY TOWNE CENTER
IS SEPTEMBER 13th

Ramsey residents will have a rare
chance to help design the future 1001< of a
new "Ramsey Towne Center" at a
worl<shop co-sponsored by the City of
Ramsey and Metropolitan Council.
The worl<shop will focus on a
design plan for a 200-acre parcel of land
on Highway 10 just west of Ramsey
Boulevard. The undeveloped site, called
Ramsey Towne Center, is slated for
compact, mixed-use development
including housing, retail, services and other
amenities. It will be designated to support
a transit stop that could be added to the
N orthstar Corridor Commuter Rail within
the decade.
The worl<shop will be held
Thursday, September 13 from 6:30-9:30
p.m. at Connexus Energy, 14601 Ramsey
Boulevard. There will also be an open
house on October 25 to show preliminary
results from the worl<shop.
Ramsey is one of six sites selected
by the Metropolitan Council to showcase
new urban design potential that better
serves residents, the community and the
environment. The project is part of the
Council's "Smart Growth Twin Cities"
initiative, which engages residents in
shaping future development "by choice,
not chance."
Smart Growth describes a
balanced approach to promoting growth,
protecting the environment, and effectively
using public resources to save tax dollars.
To learn more about Smart
Growth visit www.mnsmartgrowth.org/
news.htm. For more information about the
Ramsey Worl<shop, call Patricl<
Trudgeon, principal planner, City of
Ramsey, 763-427-1410.

BANFILL- LOCKE CENTER FOR THE ARTS

DEMONSTRATES DIVERSITY IN ART:
0000000 00000000000 DO 00000 ODD

This Fall, the Center is providing an education program rich in the
variety of art experiences available to enrolled students. Artists exhibiting in
the show represent the gamut of instruction from past, present, and the near
future. For example, Yali Peng will introduce students to the techniques of
Chinese and Japanese brush writing. The sl<ill and grace of the characters
she paints result from rigorous discipline and awareness of tradition. Her
classes will stress the physical and spiritual aspects of calligraphy as well as
aesthetic concerns.
The popularity of watercolor demands that Banfill-Locl<e offers a
variety of approaches to this sometimes tricl<y medium. This upcoming
exhibit provides viewers and potential watercolor artists a sampling of different
techniques and expressive possibilities for this transparent medium. In her
botanical watercolors, for example, Donna Whitman combines exacting
observance of the natural world with the artist's deep understanding of design.
Gail Speckman's vivacious florals and Patti Jeub's dramatic landscapes
illustrates two very different but beautiful examples of watercolor. Another
exciting addition to the class schedules this Fall is a poetry video worl<shop
conducted by Daniel Reiva, which will result in a collaborative performance
video.
"The Center is eager to mal<e the Community aware of the talent
and professionalism that marl< the teachers here at BLCA," says Executive
Director, Lia Rivamonte. "We are so fortunate that such accomplished
artists have agreed to share their lmowledge and experience by teaching
these classes. Students of all levels, ages, and abilities are encouraged to
tal<e advantage of the opportunity to see the worl< of our faculty members
and get inspired."
The Faculty Show continues through August 31st. Banfill-
Locke Center for the Arts is located at 6666 East River Road in
Fridley. The Center's hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10a.m.-
4p.m. For more information about The Faculty Show or other BLCA
programs and events, please call 763.574.1850 during the Center
hours.

NEW IN
TOWN

If you are a new resident of the City of Ramsey, please visit the
Municipal Center, also known as City Hall, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday to picl( up a new resident packet and your recycling
bin. We will sign you up for the recycling program at that time and provide you
with information you may need regarding the City. The Municipal Center is
located at 15153 Nowthen Blvd. NW, north of Ramsey Elementary School on
the opposite side of the road.

No one can make you feet inferior without your consent. - Eleanor Roosevelt
