The leaves
are turning and the weather is usually cooler, and cycling as a
form of exercise can be relatively free of stress injuries that are
associated with other activities. Cycling doesn't pound the
cartilage in the joints, so a strenuous 45-minute ride can worl<
the heart and lungs just as hard as an equal period of running,
without the bone-jarring effects.
But cyclists who spend a lot of time hunched over their
handlebars and continually pedaling can develop a host of muscle
and j oint problems, particularly in the legs, hands and bacl<. A
few of the most common injuries are:

· A degeneration of cartilage behind the l<neecap
( chondro-malacia), caused by using inappropriately high gears
or by overextending the lmee because a seat is too high.
· Achilles tendinitis caused by side-to-side movement of anlde
or by simple overexertion.
· Numbness in the hands from excessive pressure on the nerves
in that area.
· Muscle strains in the hamstrings, quadriceps and lower bacl<.

"In cycling, as in any other type of exercise, muscles and
joints must be loose before they can move as they should," advises
Angela Laurich, DPT of Andover Physical Therapy. "Proper
stretching can help ease or prevent most common cycling
ailments."
Laurich recommends starting and finishing rides with a
stretching routine that includes bacl< stretches (lie on your bacl<
and bring your lmees up to your chest while your lower bacl<
remains flat), Achilles tendon stretches (place one foot behind
you and lean against a wall, l<eeping both heels flat on the ground)
and hamstring stretches (with one leg extended in front of you,
lean forward from your hips and attempt to touch your toes).
"Remember to change your position frequently while you
ride," Laurich says. "Shift the pressure from one hand to the
other to decrease numbness in the hands and sit up straight
periodically to rest your bacl<."
Physical therapists are specialists in caring for aches and
pains, and can tailor exercise programs specifically designed to
prevent recurring injuries associated with cycling.
F or more information, residents can contact St. Francis
Physical Therapy at 763-753-8804, Andover Physical Therapy
at 763-433-8108 or Ham Lal<e Physical Therapy at 763-413-
0880.

THE SENIORS ARE BACK!

The Ramsey Senior Club will be bacl< at the
Center on September 5th. They will be having their
usual potlucl< at 12:00 noon and it is reported that there
will be music as well.
In October, the Seniors are hoping to have
students from the Ramsey Elementary school as part
of their program.
The Seniors are lool<ing forward to seeing
everyone bacl< for their regular meeting in September.

Character is not made in a crisis - it is only exhibited. - Robert Freeman
