Use of antihistamines can bring
welcome relief to those who suffer from hay fever.
1Q Decongestants — These medications relieve some
allergy symptoms by reducing congestion or
swelling in your nasal membranes, allowing people
to breathe more easily. Many over the counter
medications combine decongestants with
antihistamines.
Nasal sprays also available over the counter and by
prescription can also be part of your defense to allergies.
With the exception of saline nasal sprays, all medications can
have possible side effects. Please read all the information
that accompanies the medication and use as directed. If side
effects do occur, contact your doctor immediately.
Because allergies seem vague and unpredictable, it's
not surprising that misconceptions exist about their causes
and cures. As a result, several myths abound about allergies.
Allergies are psychosomatic— Although hay fever
affects your eyes and nose, allergies aren't "all in
your head." Allergies are very real medical
conditions involving your immune system. Stress
may bring on or worsen symptoms, as with most
medical conditions, it doesn't cause allergies.
Moving to the desert will cure allergies — Some
people believe that by moving to the Southwest,
their allergies will be cured. While the desert
does not have maples or ragweed, it does have
other pollen - producing plants. Sometimes,
people who are sensitive to some pollens or
molds may become sensitive (and sometimes
more sensitive) to the pollens and molds of the
new environment.
Shorthaired pets don't cause allergies — An
animals fur, including its length, isn't the irritant
causing animal allergies. The cause is their dander
(dried skin flakes), saliva and sometimes, urine.
If you are interested in more information about
allergies and their symptoms, please contact your doctor.
