moist areas, so finished basements are definitely a
Pet dander — Dogs and especially cats are the most
common animals to cause allergic reactions. The animal's
dander, saliva, and fur are the main culprits. Your pet's
fur can also collect other allergens such as pollen, dust
mites, and molds.
Molds — Many people are sensitive to the spores of
common airborne molds. Outdoor molds produce
spores mostly in the summer and early autumn. Indoor
molds shed spores all year long, creating constant
problems.
While it is not clear why people become sensitive to certain
substances, doctors do know that the tendency to develop allergies
is inherited. Sensitivities to particular substances are not inherited,
so if someone in your immediate family is sensitive to a particular
irritant, it is not guaranteed that you will be allergic to the same
substance.
Respiratory allergies are reactions by your immune system
to airborne allergens. Because these types of allergies often cause
symptoms similar to colds or flu, they are easily mistaken for these
illnesses. As with a cold, the congested head and chest, stuffy or
runny nose, coughing and sneezing area also symptoms o f respiratory
allergies but these symptoms usually subside after a few days.
Allergies on the other hand, may flare under certain conditions or
seem to never get better.
Hay fever (also known as allergic rhinitis) is a common
respiratory allergy for most people, but not all hay fever is caused by
pollen. Other inhaled irritants can cause identical reactions. Some
people have hay fever symptoms mainly in the winter when their
homes are closed up, allowing more exposure to dust mites and
mold. Others may experience symptoms when they enter a home or
room that has a cat, while still others experience symptoms randomly
all year long.
Doctors suggest that the be approach formanaging allergies
is to know and avoid those substances that trigger allergic reactions.
While this approach may prevent more severe or frequent reactions,
it is agreed by the medical community that it is virtually impossible
completely avoid all exposures. With this said, there are several
types of medication available to can help relieve or prevent allergy
symptoms. See your doctor if you are experiencing any bothersome
symptoms for medical advise specific to your condition.
Antihistamines — These medications are used most often
to relieve hay fever symptoms and are available over
the counter or through prescription. Antihistamines block
