The City of Ramsey requires a building permit for any new
construction, remodeling, alterations, and! or additions to your property.
Permits are also required for accessory structures (garages or sheds
over 120 sq. ft), above ground and below ground swimming pools
(with 5000 gallons or greater capacity), decl(s over 30 inches in height
that are attached to a structure, and retaining walls over 4 feet in
height. Permits are also required for re-roofing, siding, fences over
six feet in height, and underground irrigation systems. The City of
Ramsey has adopted the current state building code by ordinance and
has a staff of Building Inspectors who worl( towards better building
safety. These permits are required by law and allow a trained building
department representative to review your proj ect prior to building in
order to assure that it meets local and state codes which could save
you time and money. Failure to acquire a building permit is in violation
of state law and punishable as a misdemeanor.
If you are planning a building proj ect, you need to complete a
building permit application. Building permit applications are available
on-line at www.ci.ramsey.mn.us or at city hall located at 15153
N owthen Blvd NW. Include with the permit your plans on how you
intend to build the structure, as well as the lumber size that you intend
to use. If a footing is used, list the type and size of the footing as well
provide a drawing of your property and where this proposed structure
will be according to your property lines, well, septic, etc. Once your
permit is received, a building department representative will review it
for code compliance and determine a fee for the permit based on the
worl( being done. If your project meets state and local codes, a
permit will be issued and you will receive your plane s ) bacl( with notes
and an inspection card to be placed at the job site. As your worl(
progresses, you will need to call for inspections (427-1410). A trained
Building Inspector will come to your job site and assure that your
proj ect meets code and can answer code questions if needed. If you
cannot be there when the Inspector arrives-no problem-simply leave
your inspection card in plain view so he/she can see it and they will
sign it off after completing the inspection. If there are concerns, the
Inspector will leave you notice of the corrections required.
Once the required inspections are reviewed for your proj ect,
your card will be finalized and placed in your property file at the City.
This is an important part of your property file. If you should sell your
home, realtors may contact the City for the inspection records. Lawyers
and insurance companies also may research inspection records for
worl( that may have failed or caused harm in which they are being
asked to pay. Though some projects do not require a permit, they
must still meet set-bacl( requirements and other local codes. Protect
yourself and others by contacting City Hall and obtaining a building
permit. Let us assist you in mal(ing sure your proj ect is safe for you
and others to enjoy. If you have questions, feel free to call the building
department at 763-427-1410.
