SWEDISH HOLIDAY TEA

Calling all GIRLS! Yes, girls of all
ages. . . females, girls, ladies, women, lassies and
gals. The American Girl Tea Party is just for
you! Bring your grandmother, your auntie, your
daughter or your friend and share history together.
The Anoka County Historical Society will
host an intergenerational women's tea featuring
traditional holiday practices and tastes of Swedish
immigrants circa 1850, to be held at the History
Center on Saturday, December 18, at 1 :00 pm.
First, grab Kirsten, one of The American
Girls Collection series bool(s. There are six
Kirsten titles available through the Anoka County
library system. The novels take place in
Minnesota during the 1850's and depict the life
of a Swedish immigrant family. Their life was
similar to that of many Anoka County residents
at the same time, and you may be surprised to
learn that some traditions, lil(e the Santa Lucia
crown mentioned in the books, tool( place here
as well.
Then, on Saturday, December 18th, at
1:00 pm, come to the History Center for a tea
party, to discuss the story, and to learn more about
daily life in Anoka County during the 1850's.
Activities will highlight experiences that would
be familiar to Kirsten, and will offer an opportunity
to try your hand at the skills she would undoubtedly
learn. You'll tour the museum, explore the quilts
in the ACHS collection and do some
patchworking of your own. Mal(e a wreath for
the Santa Lucia celebration, and explore
Christmas traditions through time. Then ldds, their
dolls, and the grown-ups will have a tea party!
You'll taste several authentic teas, and pastries,
and be expected to sticl( out your pinky finger in
much the same way as Kirsten would. There
will be time to select your next book from our
library, and you can even help to plan the next
American Girl Tea by sharing your opinions, ideas
and suggestions for future fun!
Wear your own 1850's costume or
sunbonnet, and bring your favorite doll along to
share the fun! We'll have hats and gloves to
share. Activities are geared to girls age six to
ten. Everyone is invited, but space is limited, so
get your tickets right away by calling the History
Center at 763-421-0600. Tickets cost $ 7.00
for adults and $5.00 for girls, but your doll can
have tea for free!
The Minnesota Legislature has recently passed a law that
restricts the use of lawn fertilizers containing phosphorus. The law
initially applied to the Twin Cities seven county metropolitan area, but
was expanded by the legislature in the last session to cover all of
Minnesota.
The following information on the new law will prove valuable
to Ramsey residents:
As of January 1, 2005, fertilizers containing phosphorus cannot
be used on lawns in Minnesota. This is an expansion of the
current law which restricts use of phosphorus in lawn fertilizer
to 0% in the Twin Cities seven county metropolitan area and
up to 3% in Greater Minnesota.
IT IS NOT A BAN. Fertilizers containing phosphorus may be
used on lawns if a soil test indicates that it is needed or if a
new lawn is being established. These restrictions apply only
to lawn fertilizers and do not apply to fertilizers used for
agriculture crops, trees, flower and vegetable gardening, or by
trained staff on golf courses.
of Agriculture web site at www.mda.state.mn.us.
