OVER, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN:
ANOKA COUNTY VOTES!

The yard signs are coming down and the bumper stickers are being
peeled off, but the political campaign season is more than just a memory at the
Anoka County Historical Society! A button from the only woman to be a vice
presidential candidate on a major party ticl(et is on display as well as a campaign
card from another woman running for a county office in 1938. A cloth banner
from Charles Lindberg's run at Minnesota's governorship was well used, but
can be seen in this exhibit.
Anoka County Votes! is an exhibit that highlights some of the campaign
memorabilia from local, state and national races from as far bacl( as the election
of President McKinley. Some of these items are less than expected, such as
the bobble head Menard's man advocating a vote for low hardware prices.
Others, such as the absentee ballot envelopes from service men in the 1950's or
the invitation to the 1896 Inaugural Ball, are more rare. There is even a voting
machine and voting booths-but probably not like the ones you used when you
voted on November 2nd!
Do you remember a presidential candidate named Judd? The exhibit
includes his campaign button. Very little is known about him since he did not
win the office and he is almost lost to history-except for his button touting him
as a presidential choice.
This special exhibit is located in the History Center and Library lobby
and is free to everyone. Anoka County Votes! will be open until the Holiday
exhibit comes up in December. Stop by to see the lobby exhibit on campaigns
and voting in Anoka County's past. It's a lot more fun than peeling the bumper
stickers off your car!
The Anoka County History Center and Library is located at 2135 Third
Avenue North in downtown Anoka. It is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on
Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 763-421-0600.
AN ANOKA COUNTY
HOLIDAY TREE

ftfL:
The Fridley Historical Society is bringing the 2004 "Around the County"
ornament to hang on the Holiday Tree at the Anoka County History Center and
Library. The presentation and a short reception will be held at the History
Center at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 7th.
This holiday season is the tenth annual "Anoka County Holiday Tree"
celebration at the Anoka County Historical Society. Just as each state is invited
in turn to provide the National Christmas Tree in Washington, each community
in Anoka County is invited in turn to provide an ornament for the County Tree.
Each ornament reflects a unique aspect of its community along with the year of
presentation. The Fridley ornament is being made especially for this occasion
by skilled metal craftsmen. Although the ornament will be a surprise until its
presentation on December 7th, we lmow that it will incorporate the city's logo
and the windmill logo used by the Fridley Historical Society. The windmill motif
was selected in honor of Fridley's agricultural heritage.
