1~ CLOSE THE Loop ~
~ ~~ Buy RECYCLED ~ ~~
<:;J PRODUCTS! <:;J

Each year, Ramsey residents strive to recycle a
number of different materials, through the curbside
program, the Recycle Day events, or other means and
they do a great job! However, that is only step one of the
recycling process. Step two involves turning the
recyclables into new products. Step three, which is lmown
as "closing the loop", is purchasing products that are made
from recycled materials and, when the time comes,
recycling them again (which starts the cycle over again)!
When products made with post-consumer
recycled content are purchased, the marl(et demand for
these types of products is increased, which ultimately
diminishes the need to harvest or mine raw materials and
can reduce the amount of pollutants in our environment.
Here are just a few examples of how recycling can help
prote~ our environment:

Glass made from recycled glass reduces related
air pollution by 20% and water pollution by 50%
compared to using virgin materials, and recycling
glass saves 25-32% of the energy used to make
+ glass.

Recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy
needed to mal(e new aluminum from bauxite ore
which, in turn, helps reduce the amount of carbon
dioxide (a greenhouse gas) released during energy
+ production.

It takes 75% less energy to recycle steel than to
+ produce steel from iron ore.

One ton of recycled paper saves 4,100 l(wh of
energy, which is enough to power an average
home for six months, yet paper makes up about
40-50% of the waste stream by weight and
volume!

When out shopping for products, there are some
key words to look for to help decipher which products are
made from recycled materials:

+ Post Consumer
+ Reprocessed
+ Recovered

+ Recycled Fibers
+ Pre Consumer
+ Reused

Help close the loop and keep recycled products
in demand; buy recycled! Pools, lal(es and ponds. They all hold exciting recre-
ational opportunities for families year round. But unsuper-
vised children and water can be extremely dangerous and
even deadly, for children who aren't aware of its hazards in
WINTER. Consider these statistics about water-related in-
juries in the United States:

Drowning is the second leading cause of uninten-
tional injury-related death (after car accidents) for
children younger than 14 years. It's the number-one
cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for kids
ages 1 to 4.

Nearly 1,000 children die every year by drowning.

Drowning often happens quicl(ly and quietly - there
is little noise to alert parents that the child is in dan-
ger.

The majority of young children who drowned were
last seen in the home, were in the care of one or
both parents at the time of drowning, and had
been out of sight for less than 5 minutes.

Children need constant supervision around water -
whether the water is in a bathtub, a wading pool, a swimming
pool, at the beach, or a pond. Young children can drown in
less than 2 inches of water. That means drowning can happen
where you'd least expect it - small bodies of standing water
around your home, such as ditches filled with rain water, or
small ponds which lool( very appealing to l(ids waiting around
for the bus or just out playing. Pools with covers are not
even safe; many children attempt to wall( on top of pools
during the winter months and may get trapped underneath a
pool cover.
You may not have water on your property, but you
need to find out where the water hazards in your
neighborhood are. Who has a pool or hot tub? Where are
the retaining ponds or creeks that may attract children? Icy
pools, ponds, and streams are tempting play areas for l(ids.
Make neighbors who have pools aware that you have a young
child and ask them to l(eep their gates locl(ed. Keep your
pool gates locl(ed and teach your child to stay away from
water without your supervision.
Always watch children closely when they're in or
near any water, regardless of their swimming sl(ills, regardless
of the time of year. You CAN save your child's life, child
drownings are preventable.
