Remember home
movies on those little rolls from Dad's 8 mm
projector? Remember being a school safety
patrol? Remember that great trip to Excelsior
Amusement Park at the end of the school
year?
The Anoka County Historical Society
can offer you all this and more! Come to the
historic Heights Theater in Columbia
Heights, on Saturday morning, May 14th
beginning at 11:00 am. Take a nostalgic
trip back to the 1960's, to relive those school
days when, armed only with a red flag on a
pole, school safety patrols gallantly protected
their peers from dangerous traffic!
After a short introduction by
photographer Bob Comer, the Historical
Society will premier its recently acquired 8
mm movies, taken at the School Safety
Patrol picnic at the Excelsior Amusement
Park! These picnics were held for all the
Anoka County students who served their
school as crossing guards, usually in their sixth
grade year. All day long, the kids were
allowed to ride on the famous roller coaster,
and eat all the hot dogs they could hold. Maybe
you'll see yourself or someone you know!
These films were made in 1962 through
1965, and feature student school patrols from
throughout Anoka County, as well as
policemen from many of the municipal police
forces in the county. Comer was the official
Anoka County Sheriff's department
photographer at the time, so the quality is
definitely a step up from Dad's amateur
cinematography! Still, with no sound, the
movies, like the times, were a lot simpler then!
This free event is being held in the
perfect place for nostalgia buffs ... the historic
Heights Theater in Columbia Heights. This
beautifully restored theater was originally
constructed in 1926 by Gluek Brewery heir
Arthur Gluek, and has survived a bombing,
fires and tornados! The snack bar will be open
for popcorn and sodas. The theater is located
at 3951 Central Ave. in Columbia Heights.
Go to www.heightstheater.com for directions.
