Mr. Sathe stated they will also interview people in the community to make them feel part of
the process.
7. Mr. Sathe indicated the city manager hired in the City of Hibbing was successful. Mr.
Albrecht indicated the placement at the City of Carver did not go well. They should have
ensured there was a good relationship; there was a conflict between the city manager that was
hired and the city clerk. The city clerk may not have been close enough to the process.
8. Some of the city managers placed by Sathe Executive Search are still there from 10 years ago.
Follow -up question: How often do you see the same candidates back in the same pool?
Mr. Sathe replied the candidates are only placed back in the pool if they volunteer to come back;
they do not call them back.
Mr. Albrecht explained this is another reason Sathe Executive Search does not specialize in city
manager searches; they will not recruit from past clients.
9. Mr. Sathe asked how the last city manager did. If the Council could improve on that
manager what would they look for, and what would be different with the city manager they
want to hire? Mayor Gamec replied this is something they will need to look at more.
Mr. Sathe asked what the City's population is. Mayor Gamec replied the population is
between 23,000 and 25,000.
Mr. Sathe asked what the biggest challenge will be for the new city administrator.
Councilmember Jeffrey indicated the City is dealing with rapid growth and the housing
market. Councilmember Elvig noted the challenge on outer ring cities of the urban/rural mix.
He would add the commercial /retail service to this. Councilmember Strommen commented
on the management of the vision for the growth and communicating that to the public.
Councilmember Look commented there is a massive difference between the profit Sathe
Executive Search will make with other searches in comparison to municipal searches.
Mr. Sathe explained he likes doing city searches. It is not a big part of their business as far as the
percentage, but he loves working with city councils. They also work with nonprofits, which they
include in the same group as cities.
Closing Comments from Mayor
Mayor Gamec thanked Mr. Sathe and Mr. Albrecht for their time. He indicated the Council will
try to make a decision tonight.
Personnel Decisions International
Introduction by Mayor
Mayor Gamec explained the interview process, which will include a presentation by the
executive search firm and prepared questions from the Council.
City Council Work Session / February 6, 2007
Page 5 of 14
