Mr. Boos asked if there are similar playgrounds close to Ramsey which can be viewed. Mr. Basich
stated the largest one is in Shoreview at Snail Lake Elementary School.

In response to Chair Cook, Mr. Basich explained the type of plastic material used for slides. He
noted the area created under the slide which can be used as a "fort" area for children to gather. The
slide also contains moldings to act as a tactile reminder for sight impaired users.

Chair Cook thanked Mr. Basich for presenting this information.

Mr. Boos advised that the Council will review the Capital Improvement Program and Capital Outlay
Process the last week in January and will then consider official action on the purchase of some items
and authorize staffto get bids on others. In February, staffwill present the draft RFP for the Peltzer
Park proposal as well as a budget for Park Commission consideration.

Commissioner Ostrum suggested that staff conduct a neighborhood survey in the meantime. Mr.
Boos recommended the proposal and budget be included in the survey for neighbors to comment on.

Commissioner Droegemueller asked if the equipment area will remain in the same location as
currently exists. Mr. Boos stated there is no advantage to locating it elsewhere. He advised there
is about one acre of useable land in Peltzer Park.

Mr. Boos commented on the north/south trail in this area which will connect several parks to C.R.
#116. He encouraged the Commissioners to provide input on the RFP.

Commissioners Johns advised that some residents have mentioned they want benches and have
expressed interest in purchasing the playground equipment that will not be retained. Mr. Boos stated
he is unsure how the sale could be accommodated and the equipment may not be able to be sold.

Case/t2: Note Report from Anoka County

Mr. Boos stated this is a significant document that provides updates on the Anoka County park
system. He stated it is similar to a year end report and no action is required but he wanted to place
it on the Commission's agenda to make them aware of it.

The Park and Recreation Commission noted the report from Anoka County on Parks and Recreation
Committee Meeting, dated January 7, 1998.

Case #3: Articles for Ramsey Resident

Commissioner LaMere reviewed past discussion regarding interest in placing an article in the Ramsey
Resident to update and educate residents about the City's park system.

Mr. Boos suggested that an article on Peltzer Park and the connecting trail with Alpine Park would
be a worthwhile topic.

Park and Recreation Commission/January 8, 1998
Page 5 of 7
