felt it would be worth trying these alternatives to see if it makes a difference. The City
could pay for the signs and get it done quickly.

Councilmember Haas Steffen suggested that 150th has to be considered also - and
thought a three-way would be better at Bison and 150th.

Discussion ensued relating to whether or not traffic counts warrant stop signs and also the
fact that since these areas do not meet the criteria, if an accident occurs and the City has
put up stop signs, there is a liability issue.

Mr. Jankowski pointed out that the only sign a City has to erect is a railroad crossing
sign.

Ms. Matilla pointed out that they had been previously turned down for children at play
signs and the reason was because of no parks in the area. She asked what the City would
do for them if#116 did not take care of their traffic problem

Councilmember Haas Steffen stated she did not have an answer for that.

Ms. Matilla noted that it appears Council is against cul-de-sacs and if that's the case, why
do they keep getting put in.

Mayor Gamec responded that cul-de-sacs are very popular but they can only be placed on
streets that are less than 600 feet in length. Street departments literally hate cul-de-sacs -
they are an added work and expense and are also a major problem for fire emergencies,
etc. Mayor Gamec pointed out that speeding is a problem but with the ticketing that has
taken place, it appears that the speeders are, for the most part, from the neighborhood
itself.

Ms. Booth stated that she is in favor of stop signs but asked that Council not forget that
the brunt of the traffic would go to 152nd if there were barriers put in so she asked that
Council consider stop signs at 152nd also.

Motion by Councilmember Haas Steffen and seconded by Councilmember Zimmerman
that staff come back to the May 26 Council meeting with a proposal for something for
150th Lane and Bison Street, 150th Lane and Willemite, 149th Lane and Uranimite and
149th Avenue and Peridot and to also look at 151st Avenue and Lane and 152nd Avenue
and Lane. Also look at children at play signs at the west end of 149th Avenue.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Councilmembers Haas Steffen and Zimmerman.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Councilmember Haas Steffen to adjourn the meeting.

Road and Bridge Committee/May 19, 1998
