Mary Austin, 14905 Willemite Street NW, inquired .why speed bumps weren't an
alternative. She felt they really work in slowing people down and she wanted them to be
considered.

Councilmember Haas Steffen replied that the City has allowed a cabinet building
business in the neighborhood and speed bumps are a problem for his business.

Mr. Ashland did not feel that speed bumps would hurt the cabinet business.

Councilmember Haas Steffen pointed out that Council offered stop signs and speed
bumps but some people did not want that either.

Carol Booth, 7501 - 152nd Lane NW, stated the focus has been on 149th Avenue but if
stop signs or speed bumps are put in on that street, it will revert the traffic back to her
neighborhood and she did not want Council to forget what this would do to other
neighborhoods. Council also has to keep in mind they would be setting a precedence.

Mike Mclntire, 14905 Willemite Street NW, stated there was no traffic when he first
moved here but the City is growing and we need to accept added traffic, to a degree. If
they wanted to be in the area where children could play in the road, they should have
looked into the future use of the area. This is not a problem for just 149th Avenue - and
he stated he would love to see a cul-de-sac at Willemite. Maybe speed bumps or stop
signs would work - but cul-de-sacing 149th will not work.

Keith Hovelson, 149th Avenue NW, stated this is not a we against them issue for sure
and that his neighborhood is really glad all the people in the area are showing up. Speed
is an issue but the quantity of vehicles traveling these roads is a bigger problem. He
wondered if this neighborhood road is set up for this amount of traffic and for 50 mile per
hour traffic.

Mr. Jankowski replied that 1,000 to 1,200 vehicles per day is considered the upper
threshold of what residential streets should handle and the speed limit should be 30 miles
per hour since it is a residential street.

Mr. Hovelson stated he does not let his child play on the road but he would like for his
child to be able to ride bide on the side of the road.

Jim Scheveland, 5076 - 150th Avenue NW, suggested maybe patience would be the best
solution - wait to see what happens when #116 is extended.

Mayor Gamec stated he is against speed bumps and cul-de-sacs. He suggested looking at
stop signs at Bison and 150th (two-way), a four-way at Willemite and 150th, a four-way
stop at 149th and Uranimite, and a three-way at Peridot and 149th Avenue. He realized
that these areas do not warrant stop signs according to the criteria from the State but he

Road and Bridge Committee/May 19, 1998
