COUNCIL BUSINESS:

Items for Discussion:

#1: Old Town Hall Rehabilitation

Discussion ensued that the old town hall (one-room school house on St. Francis
Boulevard) has been shored up for either relocating or continued renovation.

Councilmember Haas Steffen noted that it is the only public building in Ramsey with
historic value; if it is moved, it no longer is eligible for historical society funding for
renovation.

Mayor Gamec and Councilmember Beahen preferred leaving the building in its original
location.

Councilmember Zimmerman queried whether the City is going to put money into the
renovation of the building.

Councilmember Haas Steffen responded that the County Historical Society has no funds
at this time to renovate the building. She added that it will be another 50 years before
Ramsey has another historical public building and the City should try and preserve the
historical value of this one. If the building is moved, it will be removed from the registry
of historical buildings.

Council consensus was to leave the old town hall in its current location and try to find
some funds to renovate the building.

Councilmember Haas Steffen stated that there hasn't been any formal Council action to
keep the old town hall in its current location or move it; this item should be forwarded to
a Council agenda for formal action.

Mayor Gamec stated that now the City has to determine an appropriate use for the
building, the cost of renovation, a funding source for renovation, tally of funds currently
allocated to building renovation, what funds have been spent to date and for what purpose
and what funds are left and what is supposed to be done with those remaining funds
Mayor Gamec also requested a report from the historical society as to what can be done
with the building.

John Westrum, 15660 Juniper Ridge Drive, Ramsey, stated that he would like to see the
old town hall remain in its current location and that he feels that some of the bids for
work that the City has received seem rather high.

Councilmember Haas Steffen suggested looking into having some of the work done by
volunteers.

Council Work Session/June 2, 1998
