I CASE <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />! <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br /> REPORT FROM PUBLIC SAFETY BOARD OF JANUARY 16, 2003 <br /> By: Dean Kapler, Fire Chief & James Way, Police Chief <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />The Public Safety Board (PSB) conducted a regular meeting on January 16, 2003, to discuss a <br />variety of topics related to the Fire Department, Police Department, and General Administration. <br /> <br />General Administration Issues: <br /> <br />Discussion of Board Procedures/City Code Issues <br /> <br />?olice Chief Way presented information to the Board relating~ to changes made in the City Code <br />relating to Boards and Commissions. . <br /> <br />Council Action: No action is necessary, this was presented to the PSB for informational <br />purposes only. <br /> <br />Process for Vacant Board Member Positions <br /> <br />Because of a vacancy on the Board, discussion ensued relating to the number of Board Members <br />that should be serving on the PSB. A motion was made to retain seven members on the Board <br />and to direct City staff to advertise to fill the one vacancy. <br /> <br />Council Action: Motion to ratify retaining seven members on the public Safety Board and <br />direction staff to advertise to fill the vacancy. <br /> <br />Fire Department Issues <br /> <br />Lock Box Policy Update and Discussion <br /> <br />Fire Chief Kapler explained that with the help of a FEMA grant, all businesses in Rarnsey were <br />provided with a lock box to be used for emergency situations. The majority of the local <br />businesses welcomed the program, with few exceptions. Legal actions are pending on one <br />business manager - details are being kept confidential pending that action. The issue before the <br />City now is that they cannot re-key the boxes and be sure 'that they have a unique key. He also <br />· reported that the City currently has about $17,000 into 'the lock boxes and they cannot be <br />returned. A discussion ensued and the PSB recommended that Chief Kapler research what <br />options are available - re-keying, buying new locks, going to a completely different type of box, <br />etc. <br /> <br />Council Action: Motion to ratify the direction of the PSB which is to direct Clfief Kapler to <br />research options relating to the lock boxes for'busin'esses. <br /> <br />-93- <br /> <br /> <br />
