-166- <br /> <br />Parks/Utilities Supervisor Boos stated that he would agree that trails and sidewalks do dupIicate <br />some of the transportation elements, but the trails do allow people to access the open spaces <br />within the development. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec replied that in this/nstance there ts very little open space. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pearson stated that if he was a.resident living in the new development he would <br />not be happy with a trail on one side and a sidewalk on the other side. He would, agree that a trail <br />is probably a little bit nicer to walk on, but he did not think tha~: they needed both. He stated that <br />he would be opposed to the trail inthe area where there is already a sidewalk. <br /> <br />Consensus of the Council was to eliminate the trail, to the east. <br /> <br />Principal Planner Trudgeon discussed tree preservation briefly noting that staff will be taking a <br />closer look at the tree preservation issue. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated that they need to look at what they are saving because there are a lot of <br />"junk" trees on the property. <br /> <br />Councilmember. Strommen expressed concern that they might be losing the good oaks and <br />keeping some of the undesirable things. She would like to see them focus on preserving the <br />more valuable trees. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook agreed that some of the areas that have been identified- for saving trees <br />have a lot of brush trees and the entire east side is filled with mature pines beyond their life <br />expectancy. <br /> <br />Councilrnember Strommen stated that she would like to see the new list of undesirable and <br />desirable trees' incorporated as part of the landscaping plan. <br /> <br />Parks/Utilities Supervisor Boos noted that staff had not addressed the landscaping plan at all. <br /> <br />Phncipal Planner Trudgeon stated that staff wants to focus on saving the quality trees, not <br />necessarily the quantity of trees. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen noted that one of the other things the Environmental Policy Task <br />Force is looking, at is a Percent canopy cover, not necessarily a. number of trees. <br /> <br />Principal Planner Trudgeon inquired if the Council felt that the connection to Tungsten Street <br />should occur. <br /> <br />Consensus of the Council was that there should be connection to Tungsten Street. <br /> <br />Page 5 of 9 <br /> <br />City Council/January 21; 2003 <br /> <br /> <br />
