I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

REPORT FROM PUBLIC WORKS
By: Public Works Staff

CASE #

Case # 1

Consider Street Widths in New SubdiviSions

Background:

The City's design street standards state that residential streets must have a width of 32
feet from back of curb to back of curb with parking on both sides for two way traffic.
The standards do not address street widths in situations where parking is intended to be
restricted on one or both sides of the street with traffic moving in each directionon public
streets. Staff presented recommendations for a 28-foot width where parking is restricted
on one side with two way traffic, a 24 foot width for parking restricted on both sides with
two way traffic, and a 20-foot width where parking would be restricted on both sides with
one way traffic. The Public Works Committee recommended that the City Council allow
Staff to use these street widths as guidelines for future developments when entering into
negotiations with a Planned Unit Development.

Afterward, the Committee addressed the specific street widths within the Village of
Sunfish Lake subdivision. A consensus was reached that all public streets be constructed
28 feet wide with parking restricted on the sidewalk side of the street. The public one
way street near the "center green" be constructed 20 feet wide with parking restricted on
both sides of the street. The private drive will be 18 feet wide with one way.traffic
because it had parking nodes to allow for stranded vehicles to pull off of the road for
possible emergency access. The main road from Sunwood Drive be constructed 16 feet
with barrier type curbing. Parking would be restricted on both sides of the street on this
section of roadway and a center median would be constructed between the two traffic
lanes. The Developer and Staff agreed to a 25-foot radius on each of the intersections to
make sure they work with the smaller street widths.

Ratification of the street widths in the Village of Sunfish Lake is not necessary due to the
action at the February 28th City Council meeting.

Council Action:

Ratify the recommendation of the Public Works committee regarding the use of'the
proposed standards as guidelines only when any Planned Unit DevelOpment is proposed.

Case #2

Consider Policy Regarding Sewer and Water Hook-Up

Background:

Last fall a request was made for a feasibility study for extension of sewer and water with
the likelihood that the development will request extending only sanitary sewer since the
properties water supply is performing well. The City's general policy in the past, except.
for a few exceptions, was to require connection to both City sewer and water. The reason
for the current policy is that eventually the prOperty that receives onlY one utility will
eventually receive the second at some point and requiring connection to both utilities

/02_

-265-
