•
Environmental Specialist Bacon stated that it shows potential for somebody to plant a
sample. Ile stated that was encouraging to him.
Board Member Max stated that amour maples were part of the DNR package for many
years.
Board Member Bentz asked if the study was part of a state program.
Mr. Nicholson stated that it may be part of the ReLeaf grant program.
Board Member Bentz asked about the cost of this study.
Mr. Nicholson stated there were in -kind monies but the Kunde Co. portion was just under
$5,000 for the inventory and field report. He stated that he didn't know if it was a one -to-
one match for in -kind monies.
Board Member Bentz asked if the lots were all highlands.
Mr. Nicholson stated there were some wetlands in Shady Lawn. He stated he found it
interesting to learn that some of the areas were disturbed low land and clearly wet, and
probably that way before the homes were built.
Board Member Bentz asked if a comprehensive inventory would cover the same thing,
and whether it would be useful.
Mr. Nicholson stated that yes, it would be useful. He stated that he felt it would be useful
to go back to ask what the staff needs to do their jobs to make their work more efficient,
and answer questions relating more to the natural resource inventory, and what sites are
high quality for preservation.
Board Member Bentz asked if he was familiar with any grant organizations.
Mr. Nicholson stated ReLeaf grants were small; however, some things could be done in
pieces. For example, a street tree inventory could be done inexpensively rather than an
entire city inventory. He recommended disregarding an inventory of natural areas that
are within the road right of way because they are eventually cleared.
Board Member Max suggested the option to get a company like Connexus to provide
funding to help with a comprehensive inventory.
Mr. Nicholson suggested turning some of the permit fees that go into new developments
toward money and back into maintenance for these types of things.
Environmental Specialist Bacon asked Mr. Nicholson to come back to help the city at
such a time they may be looking at a city wide tree inventory.
Mr. Nicholson suggested talking to other cities to see what they've done, and ask what
• they would have done differently.
Environmental Policy Board/ December 4, 2006
Page7ofl9
