Celebrating our independence
is one of the highlights of a Minne-
sota summer. However, according
to Safe Kids USA, each year, more
than 4,300 children ages 14 and under
are treated in emergency rooms for
injuries resulting from fireworl(s. We
all have a responsibility to ensure the
safety of ourselves and our children.
Setting a good example and acting in
a responsible manner will help us en-
joy our celebrations without danger.
Members of Safe Kids Anoka
County believe that together we can
reduce the incidents related to fire-
works. The following safety guide-
lines are offered to reduce fireworks
injury, and fires:
Don't let children play with
fireworks. Fireworks can cause seri-
ous bums as well as blast injuries that

Recreational fires are to
be used for recreation, cooking
or ceremonial purposes. Recre-
ational burning is not to be used
for disposal.
Recreational fires must
consist of clean dry wood, pro-
ducing little detectable smol(e,
odor or soot beyond the property
line; conducted with an adult
tending the fire at all times.
Respecting weather conditions,
neighbors', burning bans and air
quality so that nuisance, health or
safety hazards will not be created.
The Ramsey Fire Depart-
ment suggests a 50 foot minimum
distance between the fire site
and any structure or vehicle. If
unable to obtain this distance,

Public Safety

Safe Celebrations

can permanently impair both vision
and hearing.
Read, understand and fol-
low the instructions on each
device prior to using.
Do not try to reignite fire-
works that have not gone off
or have malfunctioned.
Use fireworks with close
adult supervision. Keep
children under active supervi-
sion-in sight and in reach at
all times when they are near
fireworks.
Keep a phone handy and
know first aid for burns.
Choose a safe place to use
fireworks that is far from any-
thing that could be damaged
from the normal or abnormal
operation of any device. Fire-

Recreational Burning
Regulations

in no circumstance shall a fire be
closer than 25 feet to any structure or
vehicle.
Burning times are Monday
through Friday from 6:00 pm to 6:00
am. Saturday, Sunday and national
holidays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 am.
A recreational fire site is an
area of no more than a 3 foot diam-
eter measured from the inside of a
fire ring or non-combustible border.
Burning Barrels are prohibited.
Disposal of larger quantities
of brush, trees, etc requires an Open
Burning Permit available through the
fire department. A fee is charged for
the permit. Any person conducting
an open burn without the necessary
permit shall be required to extinguish
said fire and can be cited and pros-

~

works should only be ignited
outdoors and away from
animals, buildings, storage
tanks, brush or combustible
materials.
Do not carry fireworks in
your pocl(et or on your per-
son.
Please review the list of
examples of legal and illegal
fireworks at WWW.FIRE.
STATE.MN.US
Remember, the safest way to
enjoy fireworks is at a public display.
If you have any questions or
concerns regarding fireworks safety,
please contact Connie Forster, Safe
Kids Anoka County at 763-767-4003.

ecuted under Ramsey City Ordinance
#92-03 (a misdemeanor) and can be
charged the cost of fire suppression
services from the city of Ramsey Fire
Department at the rate of $300 per
hour plus any other costs incurred by
the city.
Please call the Fire Depart-
ment at 763-427-4452 if you have
any questions or concerns.

www.ci.ramsey.mn.us

5
