BOARD INPUT

Chairperson McDilda asked where the wetland buffer signs are, and what the intent for
their placement is.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that the buffer signs are here at the
Municipal Center and are available for installation where required as a part of a
development.

Chairperson McDilda suggested placement on some of the trails next to wetlands. He
suggested that trails abutting wetlands should be the first to be considered for sign
placement. He offered it as a recommendation for staff, in conjunction with Park and
Recreation, to consider installing buffer signs along trails adjacent to wetlands demarked
as a buffered area.

Board Member Freeburg concurred that a couple of years ago one of the wetlands was
mowed down, even to the point of bringing in a bulldozer. He put in stakes to keep
people out of the wetland in his neighborhood and concurred that something should be
done.

Chairperson McDilda stated private property should be off limits until they are requested,
but signs should build awareness. He stated that a lot of time has been spent on the
ordinance. The signs mention the ordinance.

Board Member Max asked if landowners abutt~ng the wetlands could install signs.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated there is a provision in the ordinance
whereby property owners can voluntarily designate a buffer area. It can be recorded
against the property title.

Board Member Bentz asked if they were suggesting putting buffer signs along all the
trails.

Chairperson McDilda responded that signage would start to build awareness with the
ones that have residential properties right up next to the trail along wetlands. He
suggested that ultimately all the trails could be marked along wetlands.

Board Member Max suggested starting with the very public spots and marking them.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson requested that EPB members let staff know if there
are specific areas where they might be interested in having signs posted.

Motion by Chairperson McDilda and seconded by Board Member Freeburg to direct staff
to put up wetland buffer signs identifying wetland buffer areas along trails adjacent to
private property, leaving it up to staff to identify the most critical areas.

Environmental Policy Board/June 4, 2007
Page 6 of7 .
