The purpose of airport <br />zoning i$ %0 keep aircraft and people separated at a reasonable distance. <br /> <br />Merland ~_'~.to + Stated that Gateway Airport originated in 1972 and has been <br />in opera%~bn Since that time as a privately owned/publicly used facility <br />started ~ ar~a businessmen and serves the needs of area businesses and <br />resident$.~l M~re businesses and residents have expressed a desire to use <br />the airi~~ f~cility if improvc~aents are made. Previous studies have been <br />done to r.~ ie~. upgrading or relocating the facility; those reports met with <br />citizen ~i~ap~roval. In 1983, the City ordered the preparation of an <br />Airport ~.~.'~ te~Plan to consider the feasibility of upgrading the facility <br />at it's e~st~ng location. In 1985, the City adopted an Airport Master <br />Plan th~t'~!wo~ld upgrade the existing facility to State and Federal <br />criteriai Since then, an alternative runway layout was reviewed and <br />rejected~ ~ smccessful effort was made to be included in the National Plan <br />of Itegralt~d ~irport Systems in o.rder to enable the airport to qualify for <br />federal atirpo~t improvement funds, concurrently, steps are being taken to <br />get the ~n~ir~nmental assessment underway and accomplish airport zoning. <br />If airpd.'rt z~ning is adopted and there is a favorable environmental <br />assessmel~tl/~ tlie City can make preapplication for funds to initiate land <br />acquisit~, iIf the airport improvements are approved, land acquisition <br />could oCcUr in 1988 and construction beginning in 1989.
