COMMUNITY MEETING:
OAK WILT CONTROL &
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY
FORESTRY

Tuesday July 31, 1990
7:00 P.M.
Ramsey Municipal Center

Trees are a part of every community's quality of life. They pro-
vide many uses; conserve energy by sheltering from winter
winds and summer heat, moderate global warming, contribute
to human health, provide wildlife habitat, and reduce air pollu-
tion, soil erosion and noise. Economically speaking, wooded
lots with mature trees attract home buyers who wish to live
in a natural setting. Unfortunately our number one shade tree,
oaks, are being threatened by oak wilt. In the last 15 years
approximately 2.5-5% of our oak trees have been wiped out
by this disease, every year! If we work together we can
develop a city-wide program to save our remaining oak trees.

The City of Ramsey in cooperation with Anoka County Ex-
tension Service will be offering a community-wide meeting.
This community meeting will cover oak wilt disease control
and community forestry concerns in Ramsey. The following
people will be at the meeting to provide you with information
and answer any questions you may have:

Mark Andrews, Integrated Pest Management Specialist, will
summarize the biology and nature of the spread of oak wilt.

David Stephenson, Plant Health Specialist, will present
disease control methods and community strategies. He will
also illustrate, with an aerial map, the extent of Ramsey's
Oak Wilt problem areas.
Janette Monear, Anoka County Extension SeIVice, will em-
phasize how the Brush Chipping Program can benefit you.

Bruce Bacon, Environmental Specialist, will address sus-
tainable community forestry and how it affects you.
Mike Marquart, Community Development Intern, will
summarize this summers chipping program.

This community-wide program is the beginning of several
neighborhood meetings that will be offered in the near future.
CITY COUNCIL CONTINUES

TO REVIEW THE ISSUE

OF STREET LIGHTS

On July 24, 1990, the City Council conducted a public hear-
ing to receive citizen comments regarding the issue of street
lights in new and existing areas. Generally, the citizen com-
ments received were in favor of street lights being installed at
major intersections and possibly at regular intervals
throughout urban neighborhoods. The City Council will be
discussing this issue again on August 14, at which time Staff
is to have available a report on options for funding sources for
street light installation and maintenance.
