HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
COLLECTION DAY
GET RID OF UNWANTED HOUSEHOLD
AND GARDEN CHEMICALS
FREE OF CHARGE

~~I

A free, one-day household hazardous waste col-
lection program will be available for Ramsey
residents on Saturday, April 30, 1988. A collection
site for the wastes will be located at the Ramsey
Municipal Center, 15153 Nowthen Boulevard N.W.,
from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The collection program will allow residents to safe-
ly dispose of household hazardous wastes, common
household products which contain many of the same
chemicals as industrial hazardous waste. When
disposed of improperly - in the trash, down the drain
or on the ground, these household chemicals con-
tribute to contamination of ground water, lakes and
streams.
Wastes dropped off at the collection site will be
collected by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agen-
cy (MPCA), working together with local volunteers.
Products that will and will not be accepted at the col-
lection site are identified in the article on Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Day on page 3 of this
issue of the Ramsey Resident.
Ramsey's collection day is part of MPCA's
household hazardous waste collection program. The
collection is jointly sponsored by the MPCA and the
City of Ramsey. For more information, call 427-1410.
RAMSEY'S CLEAN

ENVIRONMENT:

JUST THE BEGINNING

Ramsey residents annually generate an estimated
8-1/2 million pounds of waste or approximately 4,270
tons. A significant portion of this waste is compris-
ed of newspaper, other paper, yard and wood
wastes, ferous metals, and glass, all of which are
recyclable or can be composted and used in ways
that will not contaminate the land.
It is because of the serious implications of pollu-
tion that our Federal government, State government,
and local units of government continue to be con-
cerned about the amount of waste being produced
and where this waste is deposited or processed.
SOLID WASTE IS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE and
the only rational way of addressing this issue is to
learn more about it. It is for this reason that the City
of Ramsey is undertaking several projects which will
help its residents understand this very complex issue
of solid waste.
Over the next year the residents of Ramsey will
receive a great deal of information about solid waste
and how, as responsible members of this communi-
ty, we can participate in waste reduction, com-
posting, recycling, and understanding the full scope
of this issue.
You will read about several activities related to this
topic which are being conducted during the month
of April. Arbor Day activities will be on April 29, 1988
and Ramsey Clean-up Day is on April 30, 1988.
"Keep America Beautiful" month is the entire month
of May.
