Community Development Director Frolik replied that around 90 percent of the work could be <br />done on a computer once they have everything in place. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pearson inquired if someone would have to be a skilled computer operator to be <br />a building official. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Frolik replied that most communities have a computerized <br />system. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak inquired if they were going to be advertising to hire a new building <br />official. <br /> <br />City Administrator Norman replied that staff was not making that recommendation at this time <br />because there may be an opportunity in-house with some mentoring. Over the next few months <br />they hope to use the services of Inspectron to provide mentoring to the existing staff as well as <br />assistance in updating the City's building official system. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook inquired if staff was anticipating that a staff member could take a <br />promotion. <br /> <br />City Administrator Norman reviewed the current staffing issues and where they hope to go in the <br />future. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak expressed concern with paying $1,300 a week for 20 hours of work. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pearson replied that is a concern, but they do have to have a team that works <br />together. <br /> <br />City Administrator Norman explained that the City will have available funds to pay for the <br />services provided by Inspectron from the salary budgeted for the building official. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak inquired as to why staff chose to go with Inspectron. <br /> <br />Interim Human Resources Manager Reed explained that the primary issue is that the City has to <br />designate a building official within 15 days by State Law. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak stated that the City already has someone in house that could fill the <br />requirement. <br /> <br />Interim Human Resources Reed explained that the City is in need of a building official that can <br />review and do inspections in the lead position as well as assist in professional development. She <br />explained that the Department of Administration came in to the City and advised staff that they <br />need to bring their building official department up to an acceptable level.
