Case #11: Report from Road and Bridge Committee 1) Status Report on Sunwood Drive Project City Engineer Jankowski reported that he anticipates bids the end of September for the Sunwood Drive project. One issue we have had to deal with is a precise alignment for Sunwood. We previously brought an alignment to City Council but the Kuraks have expressed concerns about that one. We met with them and they asked that the alignment be brought further north to abut the two wetlands; it seemed reasonable. Subsequent to our meeting, Mr. Kurak called about an alignment to parallel the roadway and go between the two designated wetlands. Mr. Jankowski felt that would create too many tight curves and the Road and Bridge Committee concurred. He stated he would like a decision on the alignment for the Kurak property and to be able to field stake Mr. Deemer's property. He asked that the Council confirm the recommendation of the Road and Bridge Committee that the final alignment be the one referred to as the approved alignment dated August 8, 1995. Councilmember Peterson inquired if the property owners would be dedicating fight-of-way if the old road was used. Mr. Schroeder replied that the right-of-way cost is relatively insignificant. Councilmember Peterson stated that in talking to the landowners, they suggested they might be interested in giving right-of-way to the City. He inquired what the speed would be due to the curves. Mr. Jankowski replied that the very tight curves would be 30 m.p.h. Councilmember Peterson inquired if from an engineering standpoint, is coming from a stop much better than a 30 m.p.h, curve in the middle. Traffic naturally would be slowing down - it would basically be a 35 m.p.h, road. Mr. Jankowski answered that it would be posted 35 m.p.h, but would be designed for more. Councilmember Zimmerman commented that it would be difficult to maneuver emergency vehicles on these tight curves. Councilmember Peterson commented that he has a number of residents in his neighborhood who are very concerned about the speed on 153rd. The way it's designed, it becomes a race track4 Councilmember Zimmerman felt that collector streets should be kept somewhat straight. He stated that the Road and Bridge Committee recommended this alignment that is to the north and abuts the two wetlands and is labeled August 8 approved alignment. Motion by Councilmember Zimmerman and seconded by Councilmember Beahen to select the road alignment through the Kurak's property labeled "August 8, 1995 approved alignment". Motion carried.
