There are a couple of additional accessory buildings on the property, an existing garden shed next
to the garage with two carport type structures. Staff was requesting that the garden shed be
moved no closer to the street than the proposed garage and that the two temporary structures be
removed.

Citizen Input

Mr. Donald Hassler stated that because of his physical limitations, he needs the one carport
structure because it is closer to the house and for him to get from the car to the house is the
handiest location. The house is setback from the house quite a ways and he has a dirt driveway
and in the winter he would have to go through snow and packed snow to get to the car from the
house.

Board Member Cleveland wondered how long the carport has been near the house.

Mr. Hassler indicated it has been there around three years.

Board Member Cleveland wondered why this was constructed near the house.

Mr. Hassler indicated it was built to make it easier for him to get to and from his car.

Chairperson VanScoy wondered if something like this could be allowed in the City.

Associate Planner Geisler stated they are not because of the material they are made out of.

Board Member Levine wondered if it was possible to build.a more permanent structure closer to
the house to give access and provide protection.

Mr. Hassler thought it would be possible but did not know if economically he could afford it.

Chairperson Van Scoy asked if there was a setback required from the river for any new structure.

Associate Planner Geisler stated the setback is one hundred feet from the river.

Board Member Brauer wondered how they can get him the carport because he thought the City
was causing Mr. Hassler a hardship.

Associate Planner Geisler thought the City could give some time for the carport to be removed
with the possibility to construct a carport that is attached to the house.

Mr. Joe Sorino, Son-in-law, stated the carport was installed there because a 36-foot ramp was
built to help his father-in-law get from the house to his car. He noted the carport is partially on
the neighbor's property with his permission. The other temporary structure they put up in order
to store things they cannot store in the garage anymore so the one carport will be removed once
the garage is built.

Board of Adjustment/September 6, 2007
Page 3 of7
