<br />STRKET LIGHTING POLICY <br /> <br />Purpose: <br /> <br />[t shall be the purpose of this policy to provide 1'01' a rational basis for the loc~\tion, types; <br />(;md methods at' installing and tinancing of municipal street lighting within the City. <br /> <br />(;,eneral: <br /> <br />'Two distinct classitications of street lighting within the City are acknowledged. Priority <br />stred lighting shall consist of street lights placed at key intersections and locations within <br />w ' <br />the City. The chief benefit from this class of lighting is to improve safety at higher <br />volume intersections and on high speed roadways. Because of the general nature of the <br />bene tit from this type 0 f lighting it shall be tinanced through revenue derived from the <br />general fund and a citywidl;.: street lighting utility. <br /> <br />Subdivision lighting is the second dassitlcation of street lighting. 'The increased benetit <br />from this continuous type of lighting includes greater pedestrian safety and increased <br />crime deterrent. These bem:!1ts occur chielly to residents of subdivisions and <br />neighborhoods, wl1Q should be involved in the decision to provide such street lighting and <br />the Hmmcing of the system. <br /> <br />Priority Street Lighting: <br /> <br />Eligibility for priority street lighting shall include the intersection (If city streets with stj;lte <br />trunk highways, county roads, and city arterial tl.l1d collector streets. In addition priority <br />lighting eligibility shall also be considered where one or morc factors may establish a <br />basis for street lighting that will bendit the general public. 'I'hese factors shall include: <br />. I-Iigh frequency 0 f nighttime accidents <br />. Marked pedestrian crossings <br />. Locations used by a high numtJer of pedestrians neat' parks and schools <br />. Selectecl intersections on neighborhood collector streets were trank volumes <br />are signiJ1cantly higher than on adjacent residential streets. <br />. The light standard shall be a <br />tiberglass \vith a traditionaire style fi.xture equipped with a 150 watt full cutoff luminaiI'. <br />Alternative styles may be installed with the approval of the Director of Public Works. <br /> <br />.1 <br />
