City Engineer Jankowski .stated that the City did make the switch last year to a granite chip
product and the modified CRS 2 tends to be stickier and has greater adherence.
Councilmember McGlone asked if the City was doing this everywhere.
City Engineer Jankowski stated that the City is using granite chip everywhere and the other CRS
2 on cul de sacs and MSA streets. He stated that they plan to use larger granite chips on the
more heavily traveled streets.
Public Works Director Olson stated that the level of satisfaction with the new product has been
measurable. He noted that with the old pea gravel, people used to bring in bags of the rock after
the projects to show that it wasn't staying on the roadways, but ending up in their yards. He
stated that with the new product, the City can sweep the streets the same day, however, they
usually wait 24 hours.
Councilmember McGlone asked what will happen with the old material that is stacked up at
Public Works facility.
Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated that they have projects around the City that it can be
used for such as drainage projects.
Councilmember McGlone asked if the City Engineer could clarify how it makes sense to pay the
higher amount now for the different material.
City Engineer Jankowski stated that he expects to get approximately 50% more time out of the
roads.
Chair Elvig asked about the assessment policy and the possibility of this being in the general
fund rather than assessments. He suggested that it may need a Work Session discussion. He
stated that the Class 5 edging that the City started to use hasn't seemed to be a big success
because it seems to just spray out onto the road.
Public Works Supervisor Reimer - stated that he hasn't gotten a lot of calls on it
City Engineer Jankowski stated that Class 2 is a superior shoulder material.
Public Works Director Olson asked if Chair Elvig was suggesting that this topic be revisited.
Chair Elvig stated that his concern is whether it is working well and if this material is causing
damage to the roads. He asked if there was some sort of seal that could be added to keep it in
place. He stated that he is just trying to open discussion.
Councilmember Dehen asked if the material is tamped or just tossed in.
Public Works Supervisor Reimer stated that they roll it and don't just toss it in place.
Public Works Committee / January 20, 2009
Page 4 of 9
