The American Red Cross has updated the water safety instruction
program for 2009. You will notice some changes in the course
curriculum and descriptions for each level. Overall, there is an increased
emphasis on water safety and drowning prevention integrated
throughout all of the levels. In addition, skills have been redistributed
among the levels to optimize skill completion. Staff will do our best to
assist you with the transition to the new curriculum. If your child has
taken Red Cross lessons in the past, please register your child for the
level they most recently participated in or successfully completed.
Parents and children participate together in several guided practice
sessions that help children learn elementary swimming skills including
water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater
exploration and more. Children that are not potty trained must wear a
swim diaper.

p & C A - Level 1 : is designed specifically for children with no prior
swimming experience and children that have a fear of the water. There
I!Y~ " The Red Cross has incorporated 3 new pre-school swim levels
. \) into the swim lesson program designed to bridge the gap
between the Parent and Child Aquatic Program and the Learn to Swim
Levels. Skills are taught and practiced through the use of games and
guided instruction. Safety skills are a component of every level. Children
that participated in the preschool program last year should sign up for the
level they most recently participated in or completed to ensure instruction
of the proper skills is received. Children must be able to take instruction
from an adult other than the parent.

LEVEL 1 Tadpoles: For children that have never had swim lessons,
have a fear or the water, or will not put their face or ears in the water.
Skills learned include water adjustment, submerging, floating, kicking,
combined arm and leg actions and playing in the water safely.

LEVEL 2 Torpedoes: For children that will put their face in the water,
can float on front /back for 3 seconds, or can swim with assistance
(lifejacket or floatation) and are very comfortable in the water. Skills
learned include rolling over, floats / glides on front and back, bobbing and
breath holding, combined arm /leg actions on front and back, finning and
recovering to vertical.

Level 3 Titans: For children that can float for 5 seconds on front and
back and can paddle stroke 10 feet. Skills learned include coordinated
swimming on front / back, changing direction while swimming, treading
water, finning, rotary breathing, recovery to standing from front/back
floats, jumping in and returning to safety, and performing jellyfish I tuck
floats.

Please Note: The use of the names TadDo/es. Toroedoes and Titans to identify the pre-school
swim levels is unIque to the Anoka Aquatic Center.
"Learn to $'wim" LevelS 1- 6

for youth 6 years Of age or older

The six levels of Learn-to-Swim help swimmers of all ages and abilities
develop swimming and diving skills. The program is designed to give
students a positive learning experience through aquatic and safety skills
in a logical progression. Safety skills and games are an integral part of
the program to enhance skill practice and development.

LEVEL 1 Introduction to Water Skills: Learn basic personal water
safety and skills; become comfortable in the water, and enjoy water
safely. Learn basic skills like bobbing, glides & floats, rolling over,
recover to standing, treading water, flutter kicks and paddle strokes to
build on as child progresses through the Levels.

LEVEL 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills: Participants will learn rhythmic
breathing, breath holding, open eyes under water, front / back glides &
floats, treading water, jelly fish & tuck floats, and finning arm action.
Students will continue to practice combined arm & leg actions and
floating skills to move forward through the water. Class taught in shallow
water with some exposure to deeper areas of the pool.

LEVEL 3 Stroke Development: Participants will learn to dive from
kneeling, rotary breathing, floating in deep water, front crawl and
elementary back, learn scissor, dolphin, and whip kicks. Primary
objective is to coordinate front crawl, elementary backstroke, survival
float and treading water. Class is taught in deep & shallow water.

LEVEL 4 Stroke Improvement: Students continue to improve on front
crawl and elementary backstroke. Participants will learn standing dives,
swimming underwater, surface dives, survival swimming, turns, treading
water using different kicks, learn breaststroke, butterfly, back crawl, and
sidestroke as well as performing dolphin kick & flutter kick on their back.
Class taught in deep & shallow water.

LEVEL 5 Stroke Refinement Major emphasis is placed on improving
coordination, refining strokes and increasing endurance. Students also
learn surface dives, shallow dive, flip turns and sculling. All strokes are
performed over increasing distances to build endurance. Class taught
primarily in deep water with some shallow water practice.

LEVEL 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency. Refining strokes so
swimmers move with smoothness, power, & ease for longer distances.
Students have three options for level 6 - in each, swimming proficiency is
the primary focus with completion of 500-yard continuous swim. Options
for level 6 include Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of Diving, and
Fitness Swimmer.

private 0/ Semi-Private Lessons

Private & semi-private lessons are scheduled during swim lesson when
possible, but maybe scheduled during other times. Group lessons take
