Councilmember McGlone stated that he wants the City itself to keep to a higher standard
and to have uniformity in the corridor. We are about to own property we are going to
have to sell - we had better be ready to turn that mirror around. He talked about allowing
grace periods. We do not want to increase the cost to the properties we want to buy.
Some have paved and to not make others do it is not fair.

Mayor Ramsey stated what if we formed a subcommittee to go out and talk to these
property owners and tell them some of the things they could do to alleviate such an
eyesore. SON storing boats in the back is not a big deal. He also noted that parts of
Lano's parking lot could not be paved due to bobcats, etc.

Discussion ensued relating to hardships, deadlines, grace periods, etc. Mayor Ramsey
stated there are some things he would like to see done before five years but some things
could wait as well.

Councilmember Look commented that he doubted if anyone could name the properties in
violation. We have major issues in this City - none of which are paving. He added that
the Volkswagen business does need paving as there is dirt being tracked out onto the
highway.

City Administrator Ulrich stated that maybe paving is too narrow a performance
standard. Maybe it should be an established lawn area and an established parking area;
make them aware of their setbacks. We should think of a less expensive way of doing
this - without paving.

Councilmember Wise stated that his concerns still lie with the properties affected by th~
eventual Highway #10 expansion and he believed we would lose several businesses. No
one will come in and invest money on properties that will be taken down the road. He
agreed with cleaning up what we have and thinking of a way to do it cheaper. We do not
need any more empty buildings.

Councilmember Dehen stated that he has noticed a lot of car dealers parking their cars
out on that right-of-way area. He thought paving and curbing would deter them from
coming out to that area. He stated that he could see delineating areas for parking and for
lawns, etc.

Mr. Ulrich inquired about what the typical setback is on Highway #10.

Mr. Gladhill replied 20 feet.

Mr. Ulrich stated they should have 40 feet between storage areas and the highway; that
would not cost money and it would improve the looks of the site.

Councilmember McGlone suggested letters could be sent out stating this is what was
supposed to be done, but here is what City Council will allow you to do instead of the
paving requirements.

City Council Work Session - June 2, 2009
