From: Jan Olsen [mailto:jolsenOci.oak-~m'ove.mn.us]
Sent: Monday, August 18, _00.~ 10:02 AM
To: Metro Area HR Managers
Subject: [tug] R_E: boards and commissions

Our Parks Commission at one time had an alternate appointed because they seemed to have
problems with the quorum issue; however, they discontinued it a few years ago and we haven't
had any problems with not having one. None of the other commissions have alternates.

From: Joyce Edmeier [mailto:JAEdmeierOci.maple-grove.mn.us]
Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 9:43 AM
To: Metro Area HR Managers
Subject: [tug] Re: boards and commissions

Givorma - The City o£Maple Grove does not have alternates for boards and commissions, just
the regular members that are appointed. With some of these groups, we ask them to call in
advance if they cannot make it to avoid not having a quorum.

From: Holly Dully [mailto :HDuffy~ci.eagan.rnn.us]
Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 9:11 AM
To: Metro Area HR Managers
Subject: [tug] RE: boards and commissions

I don't deal with this dh'ectly, but we've always had alternates appointed to our advisory
commissions. They serve one year terms and vote if a regn, tlar member is absent. They do not
automatically become a regular member if one resig-ns.

It has worked very well. They usually attend all the meetings that they are able to, so they are
familiar with ongoing issues.

See the City ofEagan website, City Code, Chapter 2, Section 2.50.
