VCrown Ridge Apartments
Crown Ridge includes 64 units, with forty units available to households with
incomes less than 60% of median income. There are six public housing units in
this privately owned and managed building. Through negotiations with HUD,
this became the first time public housing units were approved for a privately
owned and managed building anywhere in the U.S. There are 16 three-bedroom
units for larger families. Eighteen units are available at market rate rents.

Nearly all of the Crown Ridge households are families, and most come from the
Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area, with approximately 25% coming from
the City of Minneapolis. Many of the families come from diverse racial
backgrounds and are in the second or third generation of poverty. Most of the
children are in the elementary grades, and many are benefiting from extra help
with school.

The Hopkins School District and the City of Minnetonka are working diligently
to meet the needs of the children and families at Crown Ridge. The following is
a list of initiatives that the City and/or School district have undertaken or
facilitated to further ensure the families success, with an emphasis on the
children's academic success.

Tutoring Program
The Hopkins School District administers an afterschool-tutoring program for the
elementary age children at Crown Ridge. With Oak Knoll Church across the
street, providing space, free of charge, the district I~rovides tutors and
afterschool activities two evenings a week during the school year. With .15 of
the 27 Crown Ridge children participating in the first year, the program has
increased family stability. The school's evaluation of the program indicates
significant improvement in the children's academic performance. In addition,
the school district tutor has developed trusting relationships with the parents of
the students, an important element in the children's academic success.

Mail-A-Book Program
Hennepin County Library, administers the Mail-A-Book program. This program
mails three age-appropriate books to each child, every week for six weeks
during the summer. There is no cost to participate.

Smart Start Program
The Hennepin County Library and the Hopkins School District Youth Services
librarian are pursuing the implementation of the Smart Start program. This
program trains volunteers to read to children. Volunteers from the adjacent
senior apartment building, Boulevard Gardens, have offered to read to the
children.
