• for a new airport site in Carver County. While this azea is somewhat south of the
azea of greatest demand, it would provide relief to Flying Cloud.
17. C~NTIN(:ENCY iRPORTS
T1vo airports, Buffalo Municipal and Gateway North Industrial, have been identified
as possible contingenry airports to accommodate demand in the northwestern portion of the
metropolitan area if the recommended system plan cannot be fully implemented. As
mentioned in previous sections of this chapter, neither of these contingency airports offers
a totally suitable alternative to the recommended system plan. Gateway North is
constrained by residential development and can oWy support land and airside development
on an estimated ultimate land envelope of 227 acres. While Buffalo Municipal has the
potential for enhanced development, it is located too faz from Minneapolis-St. Paul to be
an effective reliever for local or non-local traffic that would otherwise use Minneapolis-St.
• Paul International It is recommended that both of these airports be developed as indicated
in Weir current master plans to maximize their "reliever to the reliever" potential.
The following section summarizes master plan rernmmendations at-both of Wese
airports.
(1) Ga ewa~r North Ind ictri 1 iroort
Gateway NorW Industrial is currently a privately owned facility; however, the
City of Ramsey is currently considering taking over sponsorship. The current land
envelope associated wiW Gateway North is much smaller than that recommended in
the airport's most recent master plan.' The master plan rernmmends that
approximately 227 acres be purchased to accommodate a paved primary runway of
3,300 feet (16/34). The purchase of this property would require We relocation of 14
homes and two commercial establishments.
