With a parallel runway, Crystal Airport has one of
the highest operating capacities of the existing reliever
airports. Therefore, the airport's airside capacity will be
adequate throughout the planning period. Landside
facilities could be supplemented with some additional
on-site development. Expansion beyond existing airport
boundaries would be difficult due to existing residential
encroachment around the site. Expansion of the itinerant
tamp and the termina]/administration facilities should be
considered to meet long-term demand.
Crystal Airport's role as a reliever could be
enhanced with the addition of a precision instrument
approach; however, suitable runway lengths cannot be
achieved. The FAA has scheduled Crystal Airport for
a D-Brite radar monitor. Crystal serves one of the high growth areas in the region, and failure to fully
implement study recommendations at other reliever
airports could result in unforeseen demand increases for
the airport.
-18-
METROPOLITAN COUNCIL
