The position was posted
at various locations on the Internet where interns or job seekers interested in Crime Prevention
may search. Four letters of interest were received and a panel consisting of the Crime Prevention
Specialist, Fire Inspector, Patrol Corporal, and Assistant City Administrator interviewed two
applicants. The panel did not recommend hiring either of the applicants interviewed, therefore
an ad was placed in the Star Tribune to recruit a larger pool of applicants. 29 letters of interest
were received; 11 of which were interviewed by the same panel. Based on the panel's
recommendation, staff recommended the hiring of Brenda Cooper for the Crime Prevention
Specialist internship at the April 23, 2002 Council meeting. Shortly after beginning work with
the Police Department, Ms. Cooper submitted her resignation due to family medical issues. Staff
reviewed the other candidates that were interviewed on April 4th and 5"' and contacted the next
highest-ranking candidate from the interview process, Jennifer Furan. Ms. Furan was still
interested in the internship opportunity, therefore the position was offered to her.

Motion by Mayor Gamec, seconded by Councilmember Kurak, to recommend that the City
Council authorize hiring of Jennifer Furan as the Crime Prevention Specialist Intern at a wage of
$10.00 per hour for an initial period not to exceed six months contingent upon successful
completion drug/alcohol screening.

Further discussion: Councilmember Kurak inquired if they are permitted to go back to the pool
of candidates and is it different because it is a temporary position. Assistant City Administrator
Nelson replied that it is a different situation because it is a temporary position, but typically they
do keep applications for one year. Councilmember Kurak inquired if the City can use the same
pool of applicants without readvertising a permanent position. Assistant City Administrator
Nelson replied that she would have to research that information.

Motion tattled. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, and Councilmembers Kurak, Anderson,
Hendriksen, and Zimmerman.
