I
I
I
I
I
I

Case//6: Discussion of Options to New Fire Station Design

Fire Chief Kapler stated that this case was presented to discuss the possible changes to the design
of Fire Station #2. The issues are the temporary location of Council Chambers and
changing/expanding the current administrative area. Staff will have financial and timeline
impacts on the total project if changes are incorporated.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that his concerns were in regards to the curved roof that is
proposed and the possibility of using the facilities for additional Staff or relocating the Council
Chambers.

Mayor Gamec questioned what the cost implications would be with moving the Council
Chambers to the new Fire Station.

Fire Chief Kapler replied that he was given a rough estimate of $41,000-$57,000 to
accommodate the Council Chambers.

Councilmember Hendriksen noted that the cost would include adding a secured room fo~ the
QCTV equipment.

Councilmember Zimmerman inquired how much additional square footage would be added.

Fire Chief Kapler replied the square footage would be increased by 431 square feet.

Mayor Gamec questioned where the additional funding would come from.

Finance Officer Lund replied that 40 to 50 thousand dollars was included for landscaping and
could be set aside to do landscaping at a later date.

Mayor Gamec stated that he would not want to put aside landscaping.

Councilmember Connolly inquired if it would be possible to use CDBG funds to make the
building handicap accessible.

Councilmember Hendriksen explained that the City could save approximately $20,000 if they
chose to go with a flat roof rather than a curved roof, but a curved roof would be more efficient
and not take up as much space so he would be willing to stay with the curved roof design.

Mayor Gamec stated that he would prefer to see the Council Chambers moved to the Fire Station
rather than separating Staff.

Councilmember Connolly inquired if the area would be secured enough so that the room could
be used for other events.

City Council/November 23, 1999
