Commissioner LaMere asked whether the Commission is ready to approve this draft C.I.P. or if it <br /> should be taken up at the next meeting. <br /> <br /> Commissioner Asfahl stated there is no rush to approve yet; the deadline is August or September. <br /> <br />Margaret Connolly, 16235 Kamacite St. NW, asked for the status of the community park and the <br />expansion on Central Park. She apologized for being late, and said she was told the meeting was <br />at 7:00 p.m. <br /> <br />Acting Chair Johns updated the citizens on these two issues, an.~ emphasized that both are <br />priorities to the Commission. <br /> <br />Ms. Connolly then asked for the status of the soccer fields. <br /> <br />Commissioner Droegemueller replied, providing a status update of the soccer field projects. He <br />said that Alpine Park would have a new field ready by this fall, and eventually there would be <br />three new fields at Central Park. He added that since there are around 900 children and adults <br />playing baseball and softball currently, new ball diamonds are planned as well. <br /> <br />Ms. Connolly stated that there are sports associations presently playing with non-residents <br />included. <br /> <br />Acting Chair Johns stated that numbers of these players as well as residential players are needed <br />for future planning. <br /> <br />Commissioner LaMere agreed, stating these totals are imperative towards any decision-making. <br /> <br />Ms. Connolly stated soccer is growing steadily, and that some teams had to play in Elk River this <br />year. She added that some wanting to play, aged 10 and younger, are being turned down. <br /> <br />Commissioner Asfahl replied that Emerald Park isn't currently used for soccer. <br /> <br />Rick Morris, 6366-144th Ave. NW, stated Emerald Park isn't used as there is limited parking and <br />the park was only recently irrigated. <br /> <br />Acting Chair Johns clarified that Emerald Park is used, but mainly for practice. <br /> <br />Kelly Casey, 18720 Ebony Street, stated that some of the parks have safety issues, such as a lack <br />of space for emergency vehicles to get through. <br /> <br />Acting Chair Johns repeated that a plan is needed so as to provide adequate space for sports. <br />Ms. Connolly asked whether registration for sports promises teams space to play. <br /> <br />Acting Chair Johns answered that no, this cannot be guaranteed. <br /> <br /> Park and Recreation Commission/July 9, 1998 <br /> Page 5 of 12 <br /> <br /> <br />
