4

Presentations of a half hour to two hours were provided for
individual service organizations, company executives,
community agencies, city personnel and to personnel of
public and government agencies. Several training sessions
in conflict management were provided at workshops and
conferences around the state. A rough estitmate of 2,000
received direct information about mediation services in
1988.

3. Re. source~.

Many dedicated volunteers have helped turn the plan for
providing dispute resolution services into a successfully
operating system. In 1988, over 1,800 hours were
contributed by volunteer case developers, mediators, board
members, committee members and office staff. This was an
increase from 1,300 hours in 1987.

Mediators and case developers took part in ongoing training
and peer group meetings during the year as well as provided
service on individual cases. The Board elected a fu] 1
complement of Directors who met monthly to oversee the
management of the organization. In July of 1988, MSAC
became an officially recognized charitable non-profit
organization and received IRS 501(c)(3) status.
Requirements for state registration as a charitable
organization were met and MSAC became a tax exempt
organization. MSAC's employer obligations were carefully
attended to.

The organization was successful in increasing the total
amount of funds raised in 1988 by 2S%. This was
accomplished without ~asking for an increase Jn funds from
the municipalities or the county. These units of government
were instrumental in the support of the organization as
again in i988, they provided 70% of the actual budget. The
City of Coon Rapids generously provided office space, which
included telephone, on an in-kind basis.

The 25% increase in total fUnds raised in 1988 came mainly
through contributions from community organizations around
the county. Funds raised this way has the dual benefit of
educating the individuals in these organizations while
allowing them a donation which directly benefits their
community. MSAC also received a grant from the Interest On
Lawyer's Trust Account Foundation for the first ~ime.

MSAC staff and directors have been active in developing
plans to introduce legislation for the funding of community
dispute resolution programs as outlined in Minnesota
Statutes 1986, Chapter 494. Legislation could provide up to
one third of a state certified program's budget. The State
