I I I I I I ,I I I I I I I I I I I I I MEMORANDUM Page 1 of 2 Councilmembers City Administrator FROM: Finance Officer Ashley DATE: July 17, 1990 SUBIECT: CALENDAR FOR 1991 BUDGET AND PROPERTY TAX LEVY During 1990, for taxes payable in 1991, all cities must comply with truth in taxation requirements as established in the 1988 legislative session and modified in the 1989 special session. The actual steps for adopting the budget and tax levy are: First, cities are to adopt a proposed budget and certify a proposed levy to the county. Next, based upon the proposed levies received from the cities, school districts and the county, the county is to mail notices of proposed 1991 property taxes to each individual parcel of property. Then, all cities, counties and school districts are to hold public hearings to discuss and inform the public as to the proposals. An initial public hearing is to be scheduled along with a reconvene date if necessary. The last step is for the council to adopt the final budget and property tax levy. This action is to take place at the last public hearing. To give the public an opportunity to participate in the process before council adopts a proposed budget and levy, our City will be holding budget committee workshop meetings. The meeting dates have been published in the Ramsey Resident .
