EVALUATION OF EXISTING FACILITIES
1. Water Supply
The City of Ramsey is underlain by two aquifers, the Ironton -Galesville and the Mount
Simon -Hinckley formations. The City's wells are currently located in the Ironton -Galesville
formation, which is located above the Mount Simon -Hinckley formation. Wells in the Ironton -
Galesville formation are currently producing between 210 and 1450 gpm.
Currently, the existing Ramsey water supply system is in need of expansion to meet
current and future water demands. If the City continues to plan on utilizing groundwater sources,
a substantial number of wells will be required. Table ES.3 provides a summary of the wells
which would be required. Currently, three new wells are planned. Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources staff have indicated that future well construction will need to be coordinated
with the overall water use of the area, and the pressure put on the Ironton -Galesville aquifer to
meet the region's water demands. Consideration of use of surface water sources, such as the
Mississippi River, will need to be addressed.
TABLE ES.3
CITY OF RAMSEY, MINNESOTA
PROJECTED WATER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS
Year
Average Day
Demand (mgd)
Maximum Day
Demand (mgd)
Total Wells
Required***
Firm
Capacity*
Total
Capacity**
2004
1.69
5.90
6
4.494
6.234
2009
3.89
11.68
12
10.614
12.354
2014
4.93
14.80
15
13.674
15.414
2020
6.18
18.55
19
17.754
19.494
*Existing Firm Capacity is 3.474 mgd
** Existing Peak Capacity 5.214 mgd (5 existing wells)
***Assumes new well ca.acities 1.02 mgd (850 gpm)
City of Ramsey, Minnesota — M21.34343
Water System Study
Page ES -2
Prepared by Bolton & Menk, Inc.
