He told the Commission that
he attended the Metropolitan Council public hearing regarding the regional
air syst~s plan. The final plan hasn't been presented yet. We will
maintain 'our ~listing in it and will be recommended as a free standing
growth c~n~ty. ~is is in committee meetings now and the final public
meeting will be sometime later this year.

Chairman Ippel told the Commission that in early February Mr. Merland Otto,
himself a~d City Administrator Dave Hartley attended a meeting at the FAA
with four of their engineers, Staff members from the Metro Council and two
Mn/DOT people.

Chairman Ippel stated that he has also contacted U. Senators Dave
Durenberger a~.d Rudy Boschwitz, Congressman Gerry Sikorski, State Senator
Greg Dahl .and Representative John Hartinger, and Mr. Darby Nelson regarding
this issue and they have lended their support. Chairman Ippel said that he
felt that some political support may help our cause.

Chairman Ippel said that Mr. Merland Otto was asked for supporting
documents and we received verbal feedback last week and it looks as if we
will be put into the national air systems plan.

City Administrator Hartley stated that it was interesting talking to the
individuals from the FAA. He said that we pressed them hard to respond to
us in one way or another. ~hey told us that they would give us an answer
in one we~k and did not. It got to be three or four weeks and nothing
happened ~til Jack got some political support. Due to Jack's efforts,
some respp~ nse was received and it happened to be favorable. City
Administrator .,Hartley stated that he has some continued concerns that there
be no foot~ dragging on this issue. The Commission should be aware that
dlscussiO~was more in the line that the FAA was trying to convince each
other. O~'r position remains that the current airport is large enough to
serve this community.

Chairman IPpel stated that we are looking for an airport to serve this
community and'we're not looking for anything bigger than what's being
proposed.

Airport Commission/March 19, 1986
